I had a BLNR - And today I don’t. (14060)

I had one of the strangest experiences when I got my BLNR and this is the first time this happen to me at this level. I went to the AD, tried it on, loved it, didn't think much about it and just purchased it.

After just a month I really hated it, I really did, I just couldn't wear it.

At that time it was super common, I found it pretentious, I really disliked the center polished links, the date and the magnifier, I never use the GMT function.. I even hated the bracelet compared to my only other Rolex the Sub C. I despised the bezel with all the numbers 2,4,6,8...

In short, a disaster, a truly impulse buy. I felt bad because I had a lot of experience with watches and I knew what I like but I still messed up.

Agreed with the OP. I also sold my BLNR and got myself a DJ36 blue, and couldn't be happier.

I find the BLNR too big and chunky with that supercase on my 6.5" wrist.

I have a smaller wrist so I went for a 14060M and managed to get one last year. I love the look of some of the larger case Rolex watches but after trying them on my wrist I knew I wouldn’t be happy with them. I think I also like the stealth properties of the Submariner, it doesn’t shout out look at me and that also suits my personality. Thankfully we’re not all the same and if you want bling you are also catered for, it’s just finding the right watch for YOU.

I know the feeling. When I bought my 14060M, the dealer had a 114060 for $500 more. Most people would’ve paid the small premium for the “newer/better” watch but when I tried them both on, the M just felt like I had already been wearing it all my life!

What a great post OP! The watch journey is full of twists and turns. I had a very similar experience with the BLNR. Wore a Sub for 10 years, purchased a BLNR and found this forum at the same time a few years ago.

Immediately I tried to make the BLNR something it was not by having the PCLs brushed. Over time the bezel and watch just bugged me. I kept looking at my wrist thinking Sub and then seeing more bling and loud bezel than I personally cared for as a daily. How could this possibly be when it looks so amazing in pictures online?

This is very simple. The ceramic watches are just too flashy for you and you feel uncomfortable wearing them. The five digit watches are not flashy at all and barely stick out. So you now have a Rolex, and you want a Rolex, and barely anyone will notice. You have your answer. Congrats. I love that piece also.

Oh man. I was on the verge of the same thing. I thought maybe if I just brush the center links it would be less flash and look more my style. I thought maybe I'll buy a sub bracelet.

Then I just was honest with myself. I couldn't justify sinking more money into something that I just wasn't happy with. Sure the bracelet change would help, but it wouldn't fundamentally change the things that bothered me about it. Mainly the wide lugs, beefier case and bulkly clasp.

I'm telling you, I tried as had as I could to want to love it. It just didn't happen...

Great post and a lot to be learned for the younger collectors if they will take the time to read and learn from the post. I think it is natural to see great photographs of watches and to hear how much another person likes something to get caught up in the hype. Take into account also that on some of the watches, SS Daytona-C, you have the whole I own one and others can not readily get one and it is a possible bad mix. The OP was smart enough to realize it did not work for him and went out and found the watch that did work. A lot of wisdom here on the TRF if we are paying attention.

Beautiful SubC, I'm a maxi case fan, and with 6.7" too I love my 116610 and 126600, but a Rolex is very expensive to not feel satisfied with the reference you choose, you have done well!

Funny story, when I turned in my BLNR, the owner of the shop, who I originally purchased the BLNR from, said the 14060 I was buying was traded in last week by the original owner. And of course he traded it in for ... a BLNR.

The trick with the maxi case is wearing the watch snug. It changes the way the watch wears - makes all the difference on my 6.5" wrist. I love the 5 digits as well, but there's something about the BLNR that feels extra special on the wrist. To each their own! Can't go wrong... I admit to lusting over the 14060 :)

Great thread. We should start another thread just for gents with 6.75” wrists and below. I knew very little about Rolex when I purchased my 116710 (black insert/green GMT). I just fell instantly in love with it. I held a five digit Pepsi in my other hand and my wife and I quickly dismissed it in favor of the six digit. The 116710 was and still is stunning!

But on the wrist it just felt to much like a diva. It wears me. I later purchased a Pepsi (now a Coke) and it is my favorite. The only down side is the increasing value makes me less likely to wear it like I wanted to wear it. Enter the 16570 polar. Hated it when I saw it.... then... bought it.... it’s my daily. Easily my favorite. Its never been polished and to me, it represents everything Rolex is moving away from.

My recent 16610 purchase is due back from Rolex Service Center this week.

Lastly, I am eyeing a 14060 online. It has no bracelet and looks a little rough. Could be a great nato strap prospect!

One other thing.... The 116710 on the Everest strap tones it down a bit. I don’t use the clasp (which I’m always scratching). Gives it more of a weekend warrior look.

This is exactly how I felt. I just never felt comfortable with it on. I don't know if it was the flash and flair or the size, or both.
