I'd go for the DD - it's a classic...

Had myself down for a SD - rose gold with brown face and brown strap - but when I tried it on it flagged itself up as something I didn't want to wear; too much going on tbh...

Taste is subjective - go with what feels right and makes you happy...

Enjoy...

As others have pointed out, your going to take a bath either way in value. But grails are meant to be kept and not sold anyways IMO.

DD is the easy answer for me here. PM, classic design and proportions, etc. I’m not sure how the look and size of the SD will age over time.

Lastly, the real question I think is actually preowned DD or new DD plus the SD when also offered by the same AD.

On Buying A New Grail Question

I have a thin wrist so i'm sure trying them on will make the difference.
I haven’t read past this post yet so if you already made the purchase, congrats. That being said, with a small wrist, the DD will wear better. Question....have you ever work a full PM watch? If not, and you like both equally I would go for the DD. The weight of a solid gold watch is incredible and I don’t know if I’m going to say this in a way that is easily understandable, but the PM watches wear warmer than SS and TT models. They conduct and disperse heat very differently from each other when on the wrist. As far as investment value, short of the SS bubble, no luxury watch is a good investment. To put it into perspective, my 116509 Daytona weighs 216g with 2 links removed. Assuming the entire watch was gold (which it isn’t as that weight includes the movement and crystal) the watch has about $7500 worth of gold when considering listed gold prices are for 24k bullion and Rolex uses 18k. Considering my Daytona has an MSRP of $37450, it should demonstrate just how poor of an investment it is.

Another thing that would factor for me is I would never pay over MSRP for a watch of any kind no matter how much I wanted it. Obviously YMMV.

Use that as your yardstick, forget about that nonsense and buy the one you like.

If it was truly a "grail" you wouldn't be asking this question. IMHO.

The first and most important question is which one you like better.

The financial aspect is a matter of buying the DD40 in the secondary market and the Sky-D from and AD. In this manner both are a better “investment”.

Buying ANY watch for over retail is a foolish move. These aren’t museum pieces.

My vote would be to buy a PM Sky-D at a great discount and to call it a day. Please post pictures when you pull the trigger.

Making money on a grail just doesn’t make sense to me. I’d expect the Sky D to hold value better if that’s what you’re asking. That watch includes a complicated and expensive movement similar as the SS Daytona does. Day Date is more complicated as well but not SS. And for that reason imo Rolex will only drip them into the markets in SS with slimmer margins.

Look for a great deal on a pre-owned gold Sky-Dweller. The Sky-Dweller is a beautiful watch, but I wouldn’t have paid a 50% premium over retail for mine.

I understand if you don’t think you’ll be able to get one new from a Rolex dealer. The gold Sky-Dweller will give you useful calendar and GMT features with the bold wrist presence of the Day-Date.

MW's definition of Grail has no reference to the opinions of others.

Definition of grail

1 capitalized : the cup or platter used according to medieval legend by Christ at the
Last Supper and thereafter the object of knightly quests

2 : the object of an extended or difficult quest

Ah. Now this makes sense. Please keep trying to find one to try on. It is worth the effort. And good luck OP.

I would never pay over retail for a piece. IMO YG DD 40 wins hands down.

.
Reading between the lines - buy the blue dial SkyD because it will appreciate more in the short team and look great on Instagram.
