My first Rolex was the one I truly wanted. So I'll keep it.

Wow! That’s perfection and undoubtedly a keeper!

If I were ever to own a second Rolex, it would be either a 4-digit Submariner or a GMT just like yours!!!

My first Rolex was a Black dial steel Daytona , I bought it from my local AD around 11 years ago and sold it to a mate around 5 years ago.
It cost me 7500 pounds and I sold it for 6500 . Ive hated myself ever since and the watch now is worth 20000

Quilty of being a huge flipper here. I flipped many Rolexes in the past to find out I was buying back the sub date or similar all the time. Now I accept the fact that no other watch will give me the satisfaction that a Rolex sub give me so I plan to stop. I own an omega that my wife gifted me when we were dating and that is the only reason I haven't flipped it. None of my previous Rolex watches have sentimental value since I have bought them and flipped then for the sake of pleasure.

The only watches I flipped were my first mistakes.

Since then I buy only what I love and keep and treasure them. It never makes financial sense to flip a watch, unless you got lucky and got a GMT or Daytona at retail, but who would want to part with either of those anyways?

I buy to wear not to make a quick profit at someone else's expense.

But we are all different and have our own reasons for doing what we choose to do, so the answer to your question is for you to do what you feel is right.

First Rolex is usually a monumental purchase, at least it was for me. Only way I’d sell is if I needed the funds, would rather hold and save up for the upgrade/other model. Nothing wrong with selling the watch after a few years of it’s going to sit and not get wrist time. The only buyers I have issues with are the ones that buy and flip immediately but tastes do change over time so nothing wrong with moving one to get another.

How does selling a watch to be able to buy the one you want equate to ‘make a quick profit at someone else’s expense’?

Not sure I agree with your jab at the OP.

Are you saying that you never sell something to help raise cash to buy the next thing you want? A car? A house? Household goods? Etc.

The OP is simply asking if any of us have ever sold our first watch in order to upgrade. There’s nothing wrong with doing that. In fact, for some of the references (18038 DDs) it allows the next purchaser to buy a watch they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to buy new. It helps cultivate new Rolex collectors. It helps keep the secondhand market robust, which benefits used and new watches. All of those things are good.

That’s hardly making a quick profit at someone else’s expense.

Sadly, my first is long gone now it was one of the best ever.
No upgrades around here either.

Everything was moved on to a happy home after the aquisition of the DSSD because they became redundant and weren't getting any wrist time.
It's strictly 116660's now
So it was a reconfiguration and consolidation of the collection.

I had my first Rolex, a TT Blusey for 18 years. It had some sentimental value to me, but I wore it less and less as the years went by. It became too flashy for me.

I traded it in 2015 towards a BLNR and never look back.

I wear my Sub 14060 every day. It´s my only Rolex, bought new in 1996. I bought it to wear it, and have no intention of ever selling it...

My first and I still love it. I'll never part with it and actually I feel that way about all my watches, even the most humble.

The op will not profit from selling his black OP39 . He'll lose money on that one for sure. The flip would certainly be a better idea if there were profit in it or at least not as much loss..

Personally, I upgraded but the first one I got my wife is a lifer for her. I have no particular attachment to any watch just yet; though I obviously like them a lot.

Depend, if your first rolex is linked to some important memory, like a key milestone in your live or gifted from someone you love, I'd say keep it
If not, and you are tired of it, then sell
