I was with my wife at her grandmother’s funeral, and my brother-in-law felt that was an appropriate time to tell several other family members how much my wife’s MOP Datejust with a domed WG/diamond bezel cost... There was no segue leading up to the comment, so I have no clue WTF that was about... Usually I’m the turd in the punch bowl at such occasions, but he took the home the trophy that day.

No, that’s never happened to me.

And girls’ panties don’t drop when I wear my 15202.

And salesmen at watch boutiques don’t laugh in my face when I ask to see high demand watches.

But nice story, OP.

College (at least in the US) is now ridiculously expensive, and for the most part ridiculously worthless. So... the price of his Rolex would only be able feed a mere fraction of those who could be fed with the bloated tuition he’s paying for said professor’s worthless tirade.

I'd love a write up of Einsteins watches... Truly a titan. He was an expert witness for my grandfather once. I recall him telling me the story of him asking his client if he knew any notable people who could discuss theoretical context around his patent. After thinking for a moment he said: "Would Einstein do?"

Apparently he was able to speak in such a manner that a jury and the judge were (my grandfather preferred jury trials for complex IP litigation whereas most sought bench trials) enchanted and could understand every word of this bleeding edge technology. After his testimony the judge said "I wish my high school science teacher was as good at explaining scientific theory as you are" or something to that effect.

Here’s a guy , the professor, probably pulling in over $100 k for very little effort and he’s gonna cash in on a big pension courtesy of the tax payers. And he’s passing judgment on a guy who worked hard and earned the right to purchase a nice watch ! Give me a break. Typical left wing collegiate attitude.

Then you have idiots like Elizabeth Warren chastising billionaires. It's a bad thing you were able to create a successful product/business and get rich?

And it can.

Addendum: just realized how this reads. Just stating the obvious. But we don’t love our mechanical pieces just for telling time.

Wear short sleeve shirts on the days you have that professor. Flaunt it, throw it in his face and sit up front. Grind it in, the arrogant bastard!

And definately chastised due to being guilty by association for looking to teenagers or anyone under 26 years old for all the required solutions for the current climate emergency(or what ever it is today).

A rolex is not an overly expensive watch. People generally believe its more expensive than it actually is. Good marketing.

Perhaps an appropriate comeback could have been something along these lines: "Thank you for your opinion. I will tell you what I think of you, but it will have to be in private because I have some class."

I find the story hard to believe. Seems like I've heard this before, similar to waking up in a hotel bathtub with a missing kidney.

He should have asked the professor if he owned his home. If yes, he could say that if he lived in a box on the street he could have fed so many of his fellow homeless with his mortgage payments.

Not surprising ... there is an all-out war in this country against the wealthy.

I disagree with that. You aren't really "spending" the money, as the wealth hasn't evaporated, its simply on your wrist instead of in the bank. People who wouldn't think twice about every several years spending $50,000 on a 3-series BMW that depreciates $10,000 in the first year, think that spending $10,000 on a watch that depreciates $1,000 in the first year is irresponsible.

I rather enjoy wearing my cheap watches.

We all have different priorities and some of us have a broader interest that goes beyond the price tag.

My sister was indignant when I bought my Explorer and maybe with some justification as they were hit hard by the crash of 2008.

I reminded her that when I was working my way through college and grad school, not one family member lifted a finger to offer any help at all and that I felt I deserved something to celebrate my accomplishments, especially in light of the sacrifices I made during that time.

The truth hurts sometimes.
