Honestly telling the reason why you did not want to raise the issue straight away, and being very nice, calm and kind with them will likely get you a new clasp and you will not loose each others trust. If you are even 1% unsure whether the scratch occured after the purchase, then do nothing ofcourse as it might not be their fault.

Absolutely!

I would ask if the AD would either supply a new clasp or put me next in line for the next watch I wanted. Including HOT SS models. I would be satisfied with either outcome.

Yes, that's why I never understand people letting a SA touch their watch instead of DIY.

I have all the hot SS models, land air sea . And I don't want two SS Daytonas. Nor do I want a SkyD. Too big for me.

The whole tape thing is pretty pathetic in my opinion.
That aside, the scratch would annoy me, so I hope you get it sorted.

If it happened at point of sale and I noticed it then I would complain.

If I noticed it after I left shop then it feasibly could be me.
I have this clasp in ss. It scratched to hell within a week of wearing the watch.

I didn't read if it was gold or ss, if ss then it's intrinsically somewhat worthless. A buff to me is fine..

Each to their own. Jewellery to some is to be worn. Others admired from the safety of a silk lined box. It's all good.

Nothing pathetic about the tape, particularly if it is not visible. We all do whatever is needed to protect whatever we feel needs to be protected. In this case, the tape protects the clasp. Thats not a problem. However, this does explain why the OP is more upset about the scratch on the clasp!
Once the issue is resolved, and the clasp is sorted either by repair/replacement, continue to cover it!
Do keep us posted as to how the clasp issue is eventually resolved!

They actually handed you a brand new watch in that condition? Let's hope it was an honest mistake. Looks like a new clasp is required. I have been in a similar situation with my AD, although not for a Rolex. When I got it home I found a deep scratch on a lug. They offered a polish, price reduction or replacement. So my AD wouldn't quibble if I took a watch back that I had accidentally bought damaged. I hope yours will not. I wouldn't leave it too long though.

The tape IS visible it doesn't tuck into the inside edges on your clasp. The tape is worse to look at than the scratches. Dump the tape wear the watch! Enjoy life and your fine time piece

If they gave it to you for retail, I'd keep my mouth shut and order and pay for a new clasp.

Sorry to hear about this issue and clearly it shouldn’t happen. You are on good terms with the AD so simply explain the issue and I would hope they will resolve it in a way that satisfies you.

On a side note, to my eyes the helicopter tape looks 10x worse than any amount of scratches could ever look but each to their own.

me: “jeeeeeez, let it go.”

also me: “frankly regardless of the silly tape thing (personal preferences etc), if my AD scratched my clasp in this manner i’d be really annoyed too.”

this is a tough one. as someone else stated i don’t think you’re going to end up super happy. this seems to inhabit a weird zone in which the dealer will say “you could’ve scratched it with your cuff,” regardless of your own knowledge otherwise. i also understand that the AD and you have a friendly relationship.

good luck, let us know how it goes?

If it were my Daytona, I’d send it to the Jooltool lady. She’ll make your clasp better than it came from the factory, and you can then sellotape it to your hearts content.

It’s a watch... I understand and I would be mad to if the AD did it to mine while sizing it. For me I would move on and enjoy that Daytona. I enjoy the hell out of mine. My GMT is scratched up and wear it all day long. At the end of the day it’s just a watch

I would be annoyed but would get them to polish the clasp and move on. Appreciate you’re not happy with that idea but I don’t know what else they could reasonably offer you to resolve the issue.

AD damages clasp while sizing on day of purchase

1. Get over it.
2. It was bound to happen anyway.
3. You’re being OCD.
4. It’s just a watch.
5. Consider them battle scars. It gives the watch character.
6. Etc.

If the scratch is a hairline as the pics indicate and not deep then it is hard for you to argue that it was not done at home, so you can ask them to make it right but they are within their rights to refuse.

I have read the whole thread. Salient points:

1) Given how careful you are with your watches, AD most likely scratched it
2) AD has sold you this white Daytona, as well as other hot watches, so clearly is good to you (and vice versa)
3) Living with it or polishing it won't work for you

So the only choice is to replace the clasp. I would take one of your other pristine, taped, perfect watches in to the AD to calmly and nicely show them how you like to keep your watches (no judgement from me). Explain that you can't keep the Daytona that way because they already "damaged" it. Ask them if they will pay for replacing the clasp or perhaps split the cost with you. And hope that they don't decide that you aren't worth the trouble in this day and age of them having an unending waiting list for hot models.

It is an unfortunate truth that they MAY decide that you are harder to please and they would in the future prefer to execute a nice, easy sale with someone else. Or they may decide that you are still a valued customer, who is very particular, and in this case they did something that left a slight mark and they have to own up to it and make it right.

Good luck. I also agree with all the folks that suggested you buy tools to resize your watches yourself. Again, no judgement, but you would likely be most happy to buy watches still in the coffin, take them home and size them carefully, and then wrap them as you see fit, and then wear them as you see fit. That way you will know that anything that happens to them is on you.
