There are a lot out there.

The vintage market is pretty tough, unless you know your stuff and you have a seller whom you trust and who has a good warranty and return policy.

The worst mistake I ever made was buying an Aquaracer in place of a Submariner. At the time the Sub was just simply a dream, but years later I afforded to buy one.

For what its worth (not Tag related now), I really don't like the term "entry level". It's seemingly an attempt to be dismissive of a watch purely on the basis that it costs less than something that's many multiples more expensive.

I don't believe a watch should or should not be bought because it's 'Entry Level' - hell, the OP is technicaly the 'enty level' Rolex and people are going nuts for it.

Like others have said Omega (eg Moonwatch or seamaster) or Tudor (BB58 or new Chrono) because they are long term keepers IMHO.

Nice gesture.

But impossible to say with any value without knowing the personal style, degree/workplace, and lifestyle of the person.

I’d start at a massive watch site like Joma or eBay and simply check new with box <5k and see what you could see them wearing and not flipping or reselling after a month.

Worst thing is gifting or receiving something expensive which is of little value or use to the people involved.

Define entry level. Is the goal to get as nice a watch as possible for 5K, or to just get something that is well made for well under 5K, or to get something with a brand name for 5K?

Some of the suggestions here like IWC, Omega, Tudor etc are far from "entry level" lol.

Every Other "Luxury" brand is going to lose 20% the day you walk out the door unless you get a 20% discount to begin with.

Put it in perspective:

Tag Heuer Chrono - $5400 msrp --- Grey NEW: $3.9k.
Omega Seamaster 300 -- $5000 MSRP --- Grey New: $4k
Breitling SoH42 - $5100 MSRP --- Gtey New: $3.4k
Hamilton Chrono Panda -$2200 MSRP --- Grey New: $1.5k
Tudor Two-Tone Chrono - $7000 MSRP --- Grey New: $5.8k

The point I'm making is that the Used price of all of those items comes in below the cost of NEW from GREY.

The only reason Rolex watches aren't in the same boat is the hype monsters...

BEFORE the 2016 Daytona Hype-fueled climb, Rolex were CONSISTENTLY sold at 85% msrp at the Greys and 70% 2nd Hand Used.

My opinion would be to guide your friend to a nice NEW GREY dealer purchase at 80% of the MSRP and then he won't lose too much on the 2nd market if he ever needs to sell.

But you can get Breitlings with a 20-50% discount. In my experience without asking out the door breitling from not a boutique will be about 500-700 more than at jomashop or another non-warranted supplier. I got a colt for like $800 in the Caribbean in the past. A colt at $800 is a lot of watch.

But it is a good point on secondary market the entry level watches make sense or with a big discount.
