I’ve been wondering the same thing for a few years.

228239 with black or teak dial is pretty tempting.

Just went and threw on my 500 and nope. I like that style better. I feel like I’ll be kicking myself when prices drop and the option is no longer available, but I like light weight watches and chronographs and this is the king of both.

The real question is who is on the other end of this trade?

Are the watches in the same condition?

I understand the value proposition in the trade, but I really do like the way my stainless steel Daytona wears. Would use up a lot of goodwill to replace it. So, I’d have to say I wouldn’t personally do the trade. Have to say the DD40 is a lovely watch in its own right. Just very different compared to a stainless professional model.

People saying that the Daytoma is a 13/14k watch forget that for 99% of people there is 0 chance to get it from an AD at this price even with 10y waiting time. Same logic applies for Nautilus, RO etc. In many countries, they are sold directly to grey dealers, VIP or bundle, therefore the implicit cost is higher and retail price less relevant

While I'm not really a PM guy, I'd be much more interested in a 36mm DD, as I think the 40mm is just too big. Perhaps trade for a YG DD36 + SS DJ?

No, I have a good sized collection. I’d see no problem doing so though.

I’ve got two DD40s, a 228235 and 228206. While I don’t daily either due to the other items in my collection, I see absolutely no reason why you couldn’t daily any DD40. Frankly, if I was only allowed one watch and had to get rid of everything else, I think I’d be wearing one of my DD40s. I think you need to get into an AD or grey and try on a DD40. If you can do that, I think you’ll have your answer.

I’m with this guy. Look at any Daytona’s from the 80s to 90s in terms of value and look at the same era DDs.

Why not just add an DD to your roster? It’s not like they are exorbitant amount of money

Even though many here believe the Daytona will be worth more down the line?! Gold is gold isn’t it!

DD is more of a niche imo; it’ll likely never have the same broad appeal and high demand as a SS sport Rolex much less a Daytona. If you really prefer the DD more than the Daytona and the numbers add up on a trade, might as well get what your heart truly desires.

Based on your original post though, it’s unclear whether you’re getting the DD because you truly prefer it more than your Daytona or just because the opportunity to obtain one has presented itself.

It’s funny how people are saying to get off the hype train and the bubble on SS pieces is bound to burst soon; a friggin’ pandemic that crippled most of the world’s economy which led to countless job losses and business closures has not even put a dent on SS Rolex market prices at all! In fact, Daytona prices in particular have even gone up a bit lately.

Sure, maybe a more catastrophic event than this pandemic can “correct” the market but it’s highly unlikely that the market price of a Daytona falls back to retail and it becomes more readily available in ADs. With the numerous influencers and grey market watch dealers sprouting nowadays, these market makers just won’t let prices tank in order to protect their business. I won’t be surprised if SS prices, more so the Daytona, hold or even continue to increase in value.

In the end, it’s gotta be a choice based on taste and preference rather than economics because if you start factoring in resale value, replacement cost in the long run and the like, it likely tilts on the Daytona’s side.

I would absolutely do that deal. The DD is a watch you keep for your lifetime. I love the Daytona but much of the appeal is based on hype and how hard it is to get. A DD is a watch you wear into retirement and eventually will to your grandkids. It is not called The President for nothing.

I was going to do a deal to swap my white dial for a yellow gold/silver quadrant Dd40 and something just told me to relax and keep the Daytona. I honestly want a lil bit more out of her. When I can swap even up for a platinum ice blue dd40 I’m going to let the Daytona go and I think even now if I change my mind the offer on the ygdd40 will stand as prices on daytonas seem firm at 35-40k. Maybe we will see 50-60 in a few years I can wait no hurry it’s just something about that ice blue that will make me forget all about the Daytona. If some reason prices fall I’ll set my sell alarm around 31-32k and take a ride on the yellow gold train so I don’t miss out completely even if I have to add a few bucks.

Or another idea: trade the SS Daytona for a gold Daytona?

The fact that this even a remote possibility is utter madness!

If you want to stay with a professional series watch, there are PM Submariners, GMTs and Daytona’s of numerous configurations you can choose. Now is the time to trade your safe queen for PM. Good luck.

I prefer the DD so I’d do it in a heartbeat.
Otherwise, I’d trade it towards an AP.

MSRP is all relative, probably doesn’t cost Rolex much difference making a Daytona vs a DD.
A DD has a higher retail due to the gold markup, whereas the Daytona’s market rate is driven by real demand.

I personally would keep the Daytona.

Is it crazy enough that the Daytona could hit 50k
