Checkout his post history on VRF (Vintage Rolex Forum). There are some incredibly in depth posts which would likely be pinned if they were posted here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'll put my faith in Ridley, whom actually put his hands on the watch and Also John Springer, and David (crowncollection). I'm sure Phillip would not post pictures and comment on a fake/franken watch....

That said, Xeramic, and his many posts over many years on VRF and elsewhere, don’t appear to be those of a rookie. But, I could be wrong… |

Just sent a PM to Phillip, asking for a follow up. After all, we are all here to learn.

His write up on Submariner inserts might be the best thing I’ve read all year on any Rolex forum. |

I'm astonished by comments like this one above my post.

Edit: I've read most of his posts which covers a wide range of topics and I would say he is not to be questioned unless you're an expert yourself. Those who are questioning his comments should take the time to read his posts. Vintageland is a minefield and us nonexperts are raw red meat in the shark tank without the help of the members who contribute their time and expertise. |

Late to the party but that insert is undoubtably aftermarket. Hands are short, curved and fake too. Coronet is not what you expect on a 50’s gilt dial. Xeramic nailed it.
Would be interesting to hear back from the thread starter.

I think some people chose to compliment Phillips work, rather than jump into The fray of whether or not it's authentic. I think it is all right to do that.
Not everyone feels qualified to determine if this watch is correct or not. |

I hope Philip does not stop posting photos of his projects on here, due to the kerfuffle of this one watch.
I appreciate him taking his time to show his work, and would like to bring him some watches to work on some day. |

I think it’s probably a case of people looking at the pictures and then not bothering to continue reading the subsequent comments. Happens all the time.

Why should it discourage Philip, he's a watchmaker not a vintage historian expert like Xeramic, don't think Xeramic can do what Philip does so why would we expect Philip to do what Xeramic can do?

Looks like I quoted the wrong person, I was trying to respond to Tavli3 on my last post.

Many have been fooled by these vintage models that are fake or contain aftermarket parts - to include some of the big-name auction houses and some of the reputable trusted dealers discussed here in past threads.

I have a good watchmaker that I use for many years. He works on any brand....vintage and new. He is no expert in a certain model or brand. He fixes and restores watches....he does not authenticate and he makes it clear.
Obviously, Philip is a very good watchmaker and I personally draw a very clear line between his work and whatever is wrong with this particular watch.

What I see in this tread are two experts showings their skills, one in the art of watchmaking and one in the study of Vintage Rolex, I can only thank them for sharing their knowledge. At this point the owner of the watch (which he may follow this TD) has a watch in perfect working condition and a technical evaluation from an expert.
Personally I learned the hard way to ask an expert before buying and service a collectible item such a 6542... |
