Honestly, target a Sub ND and call it a day.

If you don't get the "collector bug" it can be your forever or GADA (go anywhere do anything) watch.

Your ideal first Rolex is the one you want. You don't need to build up to anything. It then just comes down what you can afford and how you can best get it.

The AUP here is unambiguous, and there's a sticky at the top of this section. In short, if you want to talk buying Rolex as an investment, wealth accumulator or to gouge it's going value, you have landed exactly in the wrong place.

Be interested to hear how you get on with your search for your perfect Rolex, if it's about the love, pride of ownership, etc.

A proper investment can change your life immensely. I bought my first house when I was 21 years old whilst at university full time and working full time in a call center job for around $200k with a loan obviously.

It has now quadrupled in price to close to $1M. THAT is life changing. A $10k Rolex is a crap investment.

Now because of my investments I can afford any Rolex I want. That is how it should be done. DO NOT buy toys like luxury watches before you can.
I think this is very sound advice. I too invested in property before even considering buying a Rolex. By the time I was 35 I'd bought two apartments in very expensive districts here in Hamburg, districts where real estate prices had weathered two world wars, catastrophic bombing, the disastrous inflation of the 1920s etc. I live in the second apartment, and it has also nearly quadrupled in value! My late tax accountant gave me very sound advice. Thankfully I took it. I bought my Rolex six years after buying my second apartment...

Steel is good as Gold 2 tones are not really my style.

Something Classic and not Flashy. That's why i was looking at OP.

Might consider Date Just as well but They have skyrocketed in prices for some reason.
Steel sucks. Go with TT.
My advice is to NOT go with a dreary entry level black steel sub, explorer or air king.
Start with TT blue sub, tt skydweller or one of the many TT datejusts with fluted bezel on oyster and roman numerals.

So, how does a white dial ceramic Daytona selling for around $40,000 in the secondary market - retailing for around $13,500 from a Rolex dealer - fit into the equation of being a poor investment?

For me, and not being a genius investor, I would call that a damn good investment if I could buy one at retail whether I flip it or not.

A Rolex is a great investment.

If you're going into it thinking of it as an investment, IMHO, you're possibly going to find it harder to enjoy the watch.

As others have noted, investment threads are generally frowned upon here because this is a watch forum and not an investment form, and Rolexes have in recent times become an investment for many buyers, which has probably made the market that much more difficult for many enthusiasts to navigate. That said, the one thing I've observed from reading posts from folks who have been here a long time is that prices are unpredictable as are current events, and that the watch investment advice people give on YouTube is total crap because there are so many unknowns.

I bought my Rolex with the personal assumption that it would be a depreciating asset. I personally feel that is the safe assumption to make when buying one of these watches at MSRP, and especially if at secondary market prices. YMMV.

all jokes aside, $10k will get you the below:
DJII fluted Oyster: Used 2009 - 2016 model
DJ36 Fluted Jubilee or Oyster(your pick): 2018 or up
DJ41 Domed Jubilee or Oyster (your pick): 2018 or up

with date just there are three sizes(DJII and 41 being different in fit), multiple dial colors, 2 bracelets and 2 bezel options you can choose from.
Try them all on at a grey dealer and look for the one you like online.
I am confident you can find the above models in your price point.

Good luck and keep us posted on your pick!

My watch investment advice: Watches in general are bad investments. Buy what you like, wear it, and if you end up selling it years later for a premium then that's just a nice extra.

Congratulations. It's been a while since you started this thread and stepped in it. I've a buddy who was after a Rolex and also ended up with a DJ41. It took him a year of going around to different ADs and changing his mind on what he wanted. Didn't want a cyclops but ended up absolutely having to have a DJ41 with a cyclops and really loves it. DJs are definitely out there if one's willing to do some leg work. Again, congratulations and post some photos. The watches aren't really investments but it's nice not to lose money on them.
