They all look great in pictures, but trust me, except for the GS and GO, only a year old, they are all scratched and dinged.

Is it that cameras are not picking up wear? People using pictures that don’t show flaws? Are people posting old photos? Lying about dailying? Polishing constantly?

The only time I see scratches is when someone is asking how to fix them.

What’s the deal? Let’s see some watches that look like they’ve been worn.
Most of us are white collar workers or retired. Not a whole lot of divers, mountain climbers, working sailors or cave explorers...
I think my 23 year old YG DJ 36 looks as good as the day I bought it-same day in stock with a discount!

Well, most all of the photos I post look mint because they're taken right after my watch returns from the RSC.

I have owned four Rolex watches, but only one at a time. For the past 35 years it's been my TT DJ 16013. So, about the only time I post is when it's come back from the RSC looking like new again. Before 2009, I wore it every day. regardless of activity and had only routine servicing. However, in 2009 it got a new dial, hands and jubilee bracelet. Then, during the servicing this year, it got an overhaul, new case and case back. It came back looking like the day I bought it, absolutely beautiful. Here are some pre-2009 RSC and after.

Before it was sent off to the RSC in 2009

After servicing at the RSC in 2009

After this year's servicing at the RSC (note how sharp the case edges are now)

Thanks, and I didn't for a number of years. Would I like it to be a pristine example? Sure. But to do that I probably couldn't have actually worn it. I think my Dad would be offended too.

Can’t baby a Rolex

I own my watches to wear and I’ve never pampered them.
Learned long ago that it doesn’t matter because It shouldn’t.

How many is it safe threads do you see? People take them out for their instasnap pics and then back into the safe they go. Even the ones with the wear and tear are typically vintage and someone else put the mileage on there. Very few actually wear their watches to even tell the time these days. For others, the slightest hairline or scuff its off to the laser welder ior cape cod cloth or whatever.

I wear my watch with carefully placed individual liner stickers applied at dawn each morning and I am careful to avoid long sleeved shirts with cuffs. I have a special foam wrist band that I apply carefully over the watch as I rest my watch on the desk for computer work, or additionally wrap it in soft silk if I’m doing something else. At the end of each day, I remove the sticker liners, light an aromatherapy candle and gently wash the watch using $600 La Mer cream, then suspend the watch in front of a dyson dryer for a touchless drying experience to avoid swirls. Then, wearing cotton gloves, the watch is gently placed into its OEM box, then into a custom winder that is stored in a dark, climate-controlled room with biohazard grade air filtration system, with Mozart playing at a soothing level 3/10 through the surround speakers, where I leave my watch under observation of a tactical unit until I am ready to repeat the process the next day.

We always stay on property at Grand Floridian Club level as it keeps the days tempo very relaxing. The Club level lounge means private concierge and top level food and beverages (including alcohol, lattes, etc) all day and night as often as we want. This is the key as it means there is no schedules or itinerary we have to follow or lines or crowds to wait for a table and makes it a totally stress free experience the entire time. Outstanding Spa on property and Monorail everywhere when on the move.

I think most people just prefer to take quality pictures of their timepieces.

Here's mine showing scratches:

Nice!

We stay at the Grand Californian but not on the Club level.
Also DisneyWorld has more to do/offer than DisneyLand, even with CA Adventure next door to DisneyLand

I am relatively new to the hobby and certainly no expert, but the way Rolexes are made today vs vintage (i.e. ultra hard sapphire crystal, ceramic bezels, 904L stainless steel, nonradioactive lume), it may take a lifetime to show real signs of wear and tear, or it really may never show. And it is definitely VERY hard to see surface level scratches unless you are physically holding a modern Rolex watch and looking for the blemishes.

I saw a thread just yesterday about a daily GMT, think about 15 years old, certainly not babied, still looked brand new.

Not sure if I personally think that is a good or bad thing yet. I am currently a one watch owner (new sub LV). If this watch remains my daily for decades as I intend, I would appreciate seeing some unique characteristics with age as I love seeing pictures and reading war stories from vintage watch owners. But it is what it is and the general watch buying public seems to appreciate all of these technological innovations.

If anything breaks (ceramic/crystal) it gets replaced so wear isn't noticeable on a lot of new watches. You'll see more damage on a smooth bezel as posted above than on a fluted bezel. You won't see any damage on a jubilee either (new or old).

It’s a Rolex Forum. A classy place. We buy scented oils and glacier water based watch cleaner solutions. Every pic is naturally a glamour shot.

And I f we wanted any just rolled out of bed and slapped on a Casio for Tom Ford, watch picture, we’d be bankrupt.

Some folks misconstrue over polishing for mint.
