Thank you again for everyone feedback! I am very grateful of your suggestions. It seems that Submariner or Explorer is the way to go.

I originally found Bob’s watches by using Google and it was one of the closer locations to me. However, as several users have pointed out, their pricing is a bit more expensive and their recent Yelp reviews haven’t been that great.

On the other hand, many have suggested OC watch guy instead. They’re a bit farther away but I have decided to go there in the next couple weeks.

As a first time Rolex watch buyer, thank you all for your responses, suggestions, and feedback. Im so grateful I stumbled into this community!!

Admittedly, I’m more cynical than most. And would love to be wrong. But hey, I’ll keep the thread going and toss Bob a few more eyeballs.

(And the romantic in me will keep my fingers crossed that you find the perfect watch for your man and live happily ever after.)

Go with a submariner.

Im from OC. I would check out Happy Jewelers, they’re great and have good prices. Or OC Watch Guy is reliable.

As others have said, I'd go with the Submariner. I would go to all the AD's in your area and tell them your story and timeframe. You may get lucky and get it at retail.

If you have any interest in a stainless datejust that may be an option to order. Last time I was in my AD she mentioned that those can be ordered now. I was looking at the new green dial. Just depends if you like style and if new verse pre-owned matters to you.

But there is nothing more classic than a Sub. Also probably the safest bet that your boyfriend will love it.

Great gift and congrats on 3 years!

Sub is a great first watch. No date better than date IMO. OCwatchguy has a great reputation

I am in Orange County too (Irvine). I HIGHLY recommend going to OCwatchguy over Bobs. Patrick and his team at OC Watch Guy will take care of you, and they are 100% more welcoming than Bobs (and better pricing).

SS Sub Date is a great watch. But suggest you also take a look at the no date SS Sub as well. Need to see it in person. No date has a different look and vibe. You will know which when you see them in person. Congrats on 3 years. And good luck on the gift.

Patrick is great, he sold me my first Rolex, a GMT coke many years ago. I have bought many more over the years from different people, but Patrick has a special place in my watch collecting journey… highly recommended.

Your best choice is Bob's watches in Newport. Good pre-owned selection and service. You can see and hold the Subs & GMT's that people are recommending to you.

I don't work there...I'm just a customer. You can check out their videos on YouTube.
Good luck and I hope this helps!

In OC, I prefer Patrick at OCWatchGuy over Bob’s Watch.

https://www.ocwatchguy.com/

If you want to denture down to SDGO, give Tony (JustRolexes) a lookup

https://www.sdwatches.com/

Both are terrific!

As for the watch to get, you can’t go wrong with a Submariner.

yea, no kidding... you don't have to be miserable about it. She values other people's input, good grief

Thank you. You highlighted one of the pet peeves I have on watch forums.

Absolutely nothing wrong with suggesting rolex.com...but there are so many guys on this forum who pat themselves on the back as if to say " I'm so cool, I'm the bomb, I don't ask other peoples' opinions and neither should you, I know what I want...blah blah blah...I got all the answers. what do YOU like? "

Give me a freaking break. People can learn from other peoples' opinions in this hobby, see different perspectives they actually may not have picked up on in judging what they like/don't like. And then decide what they like. I know I have. Even then, peoples' tastes can grow, evolve, change.

I’ve purchased many watches from Bob’s, they have always represented the watches accurately and priced them on the lower end of retail. I wish they were local to me.

Sub, if he’s active he will scratch the DJ and Explorer bezels to crap. Ceramic bezels - as good as it gets.

As many suggestions/votes as we can offer, ultimately the best thing to walk away with from this thread is some ideas of where to look to find a great watch. Style is very personal for everyone and, to be honest, we don't know his style - you do.

My opinion is that you can't go wrong with any of the choices. I have my own preferences, just like anyone else out there. YOU know what he does and what he is likely to do with the watch - which activities and such - that may be a determining factor in your final decision.

Think about your options with dealers - look through the classifieds here on the forum. Honestly, that's where I found my first Rolex. There are a LOT of options to choose from, but finding where to look is a good first step.

First and foremost, thank you all for your feedback!

I got dms from some of you with really insightful tips and personal referrals. One of which, recommended eBay for their Authenticity program which means they will verify the watch before sending it. Since this was a big purchase for me, I spent a good few months shopping around and eventually used an eBay coupon to purchase a Submariner date watch from Pure Watches!

This was my first time purchasing a watch so needless to say I needed a lot of hand holding (I'm sure I had too many questions and were borderline getting annoying haha) and the seller did just that from the start to end 🤩 I Honestly couldn't be happier in going with the authenticity program, I felt more comfortable and confident in purchasing used watches via eBay and I was ecstatic when the watch came just as pictured!

Here’s a picture of his badass new toy!!
Can't wait to surprise him this weekend for our anniversary <3

Thank you all again!!

Lucky man!

My girlfriend can’t understand why I’m looking at her across the room in a slightly disappointed way.
