I would never buy my SA jewelry. What if my wife found out?

The AD in Bedford (UK) kept me outside in the sleet/rain in December the year before last, having a conversation over the intercom!

I've been on their 'list' since 2018, I was just enquiring as to where I might be on the list' - I was questioned about what I'd previously purchased from them and suggesting that should purchase other brands etc.

I walked away. My name is still on the 'list', not heard a dicky from them and don't expect to, so, I started doing some of those competitions on Instagram, it's worked out well.

I can only speak about my express.
Never had purchase history, sent an email, went to try the sub on, was told I'll be informed if I will be put on an interest list.
After 2 weeks got an email I got put on the list but it doesn't mean I'll be getting the watch.
A year and a half and 2 emails later I got the call.
Didn't bought jewelery nor offered one, never serviced anything there.
They are a family owned AD that has been in business of selling and servicing Rolex since the 70's.

On both occasions that I visited I was treated like a king and felt special.
It made it truly a luxury experience.

I did however describe my love for watches and my collection in the initial email, and on my first visit the SA knew about my watches and discussed them with me.

I got the impression she was a watch lover as well

(OH, before you think they thought I'm a baller, the collection included everything from Gshocks, and seiko 5s, to a JLC Reverso

For all but the rarest PM pieces, as well as steel Daytonas, Jewelry + the watch at MSRP now costs more than just buying the watch from a 3rd party since prices have been falling

Totally understandable if someone doesn’t want to deal with this. But why get offended if a jewelry store is trying to sell you jewelry?

Agreed.

Rolex may be a charity, but ADs and secondary dealers are not.

Consider how you would allocate watches if you owned a Rolex AD.

Outright asking wouldn’t commonplace methinks. But tracking-vetting their wait list based on CRM stats showing your share of wallet would ne fairly normal.

I think it’s common for them to ask. When I asked my AD , he said you know you need to buy some jewelry for your wife. You know the value of these Rolex watches. I didn’t make any jewelry purchases, nor did I get a Rolex.

Well if any ADs asks this tell him/her politely the second word is off,and if everyone done the same, and stop playing these so called ADs games. Then perhaps then we could get back to normal before Rolex watches become just £$€ objects and little more today.

I've been entering competitions on Instagram to win watches (or try to win), a friend told me to look up a profile where they run said competitions - paid competitions of course.

You buy a ticket(s) and answer a simple question, they hold competitions for Rolex mainly and the occasional AP or Patek - I've been a lucky winner (more than once I might add).

See the Hulk as my avatar pic - I won that.

I love this story. Basically trying to buy a Rolex watch results in being transported into a Dickens novel.

This was clearly not the 'white glove' treatment, but rather in fact the 'red glove' treatment, i.e. a punch in the face.

My AD uses this tactic to get rid of flippers and time wasters. They quite often get requests to buy XXXX Rolex with the intention of getting the "submariner in the safe" out onto the shop floor.

I was in my AD when a fairly obnoxious guy came in asking to buy the sky dweller in the window. He just walked in and said "I will take that sky dweller". The SA asked him to come and take a seat while they got it out of the case and he said "I just want to buy it". The owner spotted him and said "you might as well make yourself comfortable while we get it out of the window so please take a seat". As he sat down he said "if I buy this I should be ok for a submariner right?". AD owner said "well lets sort out the sky dweller first shall we". Then the customer said "look, I just want to buy a submariner so what do I have to do to get one". Unphased, the AD said "well these watches are scarce so we naturally have to prioritise our regular customers, im sure you understand" to which the customer replied "ok then, ill buy some jewellery today, what do I need to spend". "oh something in the region of £100 000 sir, ill just hand you over to Sarah who is very knowledgable in this area". So the guy got abusive and left.

I was a little shocked and the SA that I was talking to just laughed and said "he was never going to buy and we were never going to sell to him anyway, we get several of those each week". Its the only way they can let down customers without telling them theyve got no hope as their stock is allocated. Ive seen them be really rude to people who deserve it and very polite to genuine people who just dont know the Rolex purchasing experience.

Well, let’s just use simple logic. Someone with a spending history at the AD is more likely to get a watch than a dude AD hopping, looking for SS professional model. I doubt many ADs are blatantly telling people to buy jewelry to obtain a Rolex, but they don’t have to. Of course, anyone who makes a purchase they weren’t planning to just to get a Rolex is a few fries short of a happy meal, but most people who have a girlfriend/wife/significant other purchase jewelry from time to time, so it’s natural that person with the spend history would get favored for an in demand watch over the guy just showing up out of nowhere and asking for a sub.

This is how anyone here would run their business too if they had an item where demand greatly exceeded supply.

Or not even a business. If you had tickets to a hot concert that you had to give away. You’re like going to give it to 1) somebody you have a relationship with, or 2) somebody you’d like a relationship with, not the first person who asks.

Happened to me at a well known store in Calabasas, CA. The owner told me I needed to spend $100K+ a year in order to get on a list for a Daytona. The community out here knows he has at least a dozen in his safes. That was my exact response.

Is this just a hypothetical? If you were told this matter of factly that's a pretty bold move. Rolex secret shops ADs all the time and that is not the experience corporate wants. They specifically tell ADs that they should be selling to first time buyers as well as repeat and "preferred" customers. If this actually happened to you I'd send a note to Rolex letting them know about your experience. Certainly you can find a better dealer.

My last conversation with a SA I was told straight up “Rolexes are for people who buy other stuff.”

This happened a number of years ago and I did report to Rolex and did not receive a response. I have found a better dealer, however inventory still remains almost unheard of for the specific models I'm looking for.

Thanks
