Black sub, I wear a 20yr old one and I bought my boy a new one for his 18th birthday last year, he'll be able to wear his or mine in 50yrs and it'll still look good.

With the current larger sizes of (many) Rolexes are any of them guaranteed to age that well? They might, but might trends not go smaller again?

This… I hope.

Personally speaking, I have a birth year SD4k (116600) from 2014 for me… I mean for my son!!
Wearing it and taking photos with us in it to reinforce the memories.

Any steel and black only sport models will age well. It doesn’t mean that the others won’t, but it’s hard to go wrong with steel and black…whether it’s a 36mm or all the way up to 42mm.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone! I appreciate the warm welcomes as well.

I realize this sounded like an oddball concern to some of you. It stems a bit from my personal experience. I inherited two watches from my father. They both belonged to his dad. A gold 34mm Omega and a stainless 30mm Gruen. I cherish them and occasionally wear them. But they are definitely not something that could fit as "daily" watches for most guys in the current style.

Anywho. I had been patiently waiting for a Sub, based partly on the consensus here. Well, the AD threw me a curveball and texted today to offer me a 126600 (SD43).

With some trepidation, I jumped on it. Am going to go pick up the watch tomorrow. I'm 6'3 and 225lbs. My son is 4 but looks like he's 6. Maybe the size won't be so bad for us? I wear a Fifty Fathoms frequently, so it shouldn't feel that large.

At any rate, if it's like most watches I've loved, I'll be hesitant until I get it on the wrist and really start to admire it.

Sub no date and date with black dial, BLRO and Explorer 1. Of the 3, the Exp1 is arguably the closest to what it was upon release in 1953. And of course DJ, DD and OP - still sport watches, just not professional series.

I’d argue Daytona has changed the most in the whole Rolex catalogue from its original design. I prefer the 4 digit design.

This was the only model Rolex that I woulld have been interested in acquiring......until I saw the 126621. Rose gold w/chocolate - I couldn't resist.

Enjoy your YM PT; it's a beautiful watch!

They’re all very very good because the collection is so restrained

Aluminum bezel is the air cooled 911. It’s how it was done for 50 years. 16610 are pretty reasonable right now and date is very useful. I believed it has a better overall movement than the regular 14060 as well (breguet overcoil). 16710B Pepsi again just too perfect but 15-20% more.

For new production most non sports oyster are perfect watches (for how watches are really worn which is smart causal not on mountains. )

My conversation with my son recently:

Me: Now you are in college, I will give you my Rolex Sea Dweller when you graduate.

Son: Wow thanks dad. Isn't it very expensive? Uh do you mind if I sell it and get something else?

Me: What do you mean?

Son: Well, I already have a Casio, and I really don't care about watches.

So basically get what you like now. Your son may not care about it at all.

The Patek Calatrava has never seemed dated. In the same vein, the Explorer seems the best contender to remain stylish in the long term.

i couldn't care less about watches at 22 either. i think usually people get converted to materialistic things closer to 30 or when they start making decent money

I’d love to see your Gruen when time permits! My first watch was a tiny (mm) Gruen diver as a grade schooler

Black submariner. Timeless and fits any occasion. Date/no date is a matter of preference, though I like the date and cyclops.

Daytona if you can snag one and add yourself to the waiting list for GMT.

Sub no date for Submariner as the main design won't change. For GMT the BLNR as the colors are the best representative of the GMT function (Black for night, Blue for day), will never be discontinued as it will be like the black Sub in the Submariner line. DJ and DD for classic, I feel the sky dweller won't age well. stay away from YM.

Wear your DateJust every day, and give it to him in your will.

Having a watch he remembers as being a part of you, after you are gone, will imbue it with a value that can’t be measured in money or style.

Giving an 18 to 20 year old an expensive watch is kind of a waste in my opinion.
Of course it depends on the recipient, but at that age it’s likely to be lost, traded or sold before they get to 30.

Keeping it locked away until a milestone is reached is probably more worthwhile.
A marriage or job promotion, maybe an advanced degree.

I have a BLNR, love it.. I’ve bought what I like, that’s all that matters. I’m still hoping they discontinue the BLNR and come out with a ceramic GMT “Coke..”
