Add to this that if this is a fake/Franken his friend may have had it for years. There are many floating around. To the untrained, they wouldn’t be picked up. As I said in the beginning, there was something about this one that just looked off.

Completely disagree with you. Regardless of where you buy from you need to do your due diligence. Buying a watch and then trying to work out its provenance is the wrong way round. He should have taken photos etc first, got the back opened and then bought it.
If it was such a good friend, he wouldn't have had an issue with that.

Sorry OP I have doubts.
IMO, it reminds me of Gevril bezels.
Decided to show the OP’s bezel (red outline) compared to the known Mazzariol bezels and Gevril.
Thoughts?

Each to his own. I’d have a hard time telling a good friend of mine that I didn’t trust him. Like I said, always tricky buying anything from a friend.

Always fascinated reading these threads and seeing Paul and Jose's input and research! is there a more knowledgeable community, willing to share their research, on the web?

K, I think i agree with you. Difficult to be 100%... but the U in HOUR is wider and well away from O and closer to R than any of the marks.

Wow who knew these vintage Daytonas are such a minefield and a big risk for the money paid if something is wrong. At least he said he can return it if need be.

No more a minefield than any other vintage Rolex, although the stakes are higher.

The bezel is definitely going to need some scrutiny.

Excellent work!
The OP's bezel has a 2 in 120 that doesn't match any of the known correct bezels. At least to my untrained eye.

Did you end up seeing the movement? Was this watch just totally fake, or a mix and match of authentic and aftermarket? And what about the punched paper that supposedly matched the watch?

There was so much back and forth and info about this watch, would be good to know the final outcome with details.

Caseback and movement look alright, movement is even super consistent with other pieces in close case number proximity. The strange case shape remains a mystery...

Cheers

There is something off about the movement for me, in the side-by-side. There is a seller in Vietnam who can modify a V72 to a cal 722/722-1 or a V726 to a cal 727, at truly enormous cost, and they generally seems to be dropped into a fake case, with the recesses cut in for the pushers, like this one.
