Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here- this will only be the preliminary results. I’m more looking forward to the peer reviewed paper with key findings, but could take OP a few months to fully analyze the data he collected.

THE RESULTS ARE IN!!

Absolutely nothing happened to the watch. It’s running after the experiment exactly as it was running before the experiment: spot on.

That said, the thrust of the experiment was my misguided understanding that hanging it outside the car at 45 miles an hour would substantially drop the temperature of exposure from -2°F to about -35°. But as I learned from some of the physicists on this thread, a Rolex explorer one does not “feel” windchill, and therefore the temperature of exposure remained at -2°F.

Therefore, stay tuned for the next experiment, when I will leave the watch outside my house when the temperature drops into the double digit negatives.

Where will you hide the watch outside your house during the test?

Just stick it in the freezer OP. Much less chance of it going missing compared to if left outside!

what exactly is the point of this exercise? you would be quickly dead if you and your wrist and Rolex were exposed at this temp. is this so the next guy that takes it off of your dead wrist can see how well it will perform?

Yes, but remember, my original the mistaken premise, was a test at -33°F. Freezer doesn’t get low.

No, nothing about death or dying. the point was to see if exposure for several hours to extremely low temperature like -33°F would impact the workings of the watch.

I live in a really remote location, so if somebody is coming up to the house, the watch is the least of my problems (and theirs).

Watches don’t care about wind chill. That has more to do with the rate of your body heat being sapped by a continued flow of cold air and water evaporation. It was only experiencing -2 F which it can handle no problem.

Quick Google suggests watch lubricants are good down to about -22 f. Might need a service if you get anywhere near that
