I’ve got a 20 yr old 4Runner that I use as a beater for outdoors stuff. It needs an oil change so maybe I’ll just trade it in for new GX overtrail. If the new land cruiser had the same engine as GX, I’d probably pick one of those up as it’s more what I need but that 4 cylinder has me concerned.

I suspect you’d be happy with either. As much as I like the Toyota badge I don’t feel like it makes much sense not to grab the Lexus for similar money as it is no longer the ugly twin. Plus the dealership experience is better.

Where I live, Land Rover Defenders scream "I'm a toolbag from DC and want to feel like I'm roughing it!"

They seemed awesome when the were reintroduced a few years ago (I'm a 90's kid and loved the old Defender 90) but DC posers have ruined them for me. Hell, people from DC/NY/PA/VA have ruined the Land Rover brand, the housing market in my area, and just about anything else they touch. Most of the residents in my county are starting to get aggressive towards the "come heres."

So yeah, my vote is no to the Defender.

OP, the Defender really is a nice vehicle but I’d only consider it if you’re planning on getting rid of it before warranty expires, you live close to a dealer and you have a high tolerance for dealing with the hassle involved in repairs (I don’t).
I’ve got a 10 year old GX that has never had any repairs outside of normal wear items like brakes! It is, or at least was until the new model, the single most reliable car built. Hopefully the new model follows suit.
