From all your friends in Oz who are watching this from afar.

We hope you all make it through this safely.

Won’t you just float out to sea? Seems like a terrible idea.

Nah, the door will be open so the inside of it will take in water if it gets to that. Hence the dog being on the canoe and me in the hammock. Also, surrounded by woods and put two scuba tanks with regs in there in case something stupid happens. We are also at the top end of where the surge should be so potentially will only see a few feet of flooding at max surge.

Please note this is a worst possible case last resort option to keep me and my dog alive if the house starts blowing away or water gets to us.

I’ve had quite a few people tell me it’s a pretty brilliant idea.

We will probably know by the end of the week if it’s as brilliant as we think or not.

Seems like there is potential. The problem, as I see it, this is a pass/fail situation. Praying for all of you down there.

If it fails then I throw the dog in the boat and he and I ride it out on the boat. Only reason the shipping container wouldn’t work is if we get 22’ of surge. The max that’s being predicted is 15’. Add high tide to that at 3’ and I’ve still got 5’ inside the container. I’m saying 22’ instead of 23’ because of the height of the canoe.

This was when it was predicted to come straight up the mouth of Tampa Bay. Now that it’s projecting a little south it should mean less surge in Tampa Bay than a direct hit.

Do you have the Deuce.5 with you? Does it have a snorkel? Was thinking that if you park it against the shipping container it may help to brace the container from rolling in strong wind. Not sure how secure the roof will be but reasonably confident that the truck will remain upright and in place.

Deuce is the way out if need be and yea snorkel is installed.

Container weighs more than 5,000 lbs I don’t believe the amount of water or wind we will get will substantially move it.

I do not have the option to evacuate, work is all hands for emergency response before first light of the next day. My better half said she is staying even though I asked her to evacuate. The dog won’t go anywhere I’m not going.

We are prepared for the worst. There is a ghenoe tied to the front porch and an empty steel shipping container we can move to for shelter if all hell breaks loose. Food, water, generators, fuel and a high water vehicle. It’s gonna hurt but we will survive. There will be hurdles to overcome but we will persevere.

Many thanks my friend, it truly does mean a lot. We've got the shutters up, modern home built to ?150?mph standard plus we have access to a large backup generator. Due to our family's LBK home / friends who have no where to really go (<cough> for their preference </cough>), we're housing a few from there until it is safe for them to return.

My truly incredible wife, who you met, is making exceptional homemade 'comfort food' for the LBK generation (traditional brisket, matzoh ball soup, etc).

MANY thanks again and your kindness is very much appreciated.

An empty shipping container will blow over in a strong enough broadside wind, and it will definately float away if the surge gets to you. Maybe weigh it down with a couple pallets of sand bags.

There is 100 acres of 50+’tall woods surrounding it. I’ve had same size empty containers in the middle of nothing and never had one move during any storm event. (I will contest this is a pretty major event though and no one living has seen the impact of a direct hit to our area).

If I’m inside of it there is no way to close the door to seal it to where it would float. It would essentially just be a man made cave that may fill with some water if the surge comes higher than expected. Hence the hammock for me and the ghenoe for the dog.

I do appreciate your concern though. This is unfortunately the best I can do with what I’m working with so I have to believe it will work.

I had some deer camp furniture in a shipping container near Panama City when Michael flattened the deer camp and thousands of acres of pine forest around it. I found the container about 100 yards away from where I left it, upside down in a ditch.

Unless it was already blown apart, I would trust my home before I'd get in a shipping container. With the container door open and at the mercy of the wind, it won't be a safe haven.

Stay safe. Hopefully the storm will weaken significantly before landfall.

For some reason, I’m reminded of Spinal Tap.

But seriously, the one thing I don’t like about the Hurricane rating system is that it only measures wind speed. It doesn’t mention the size or diameter of the storm. For example, some storms have hurricane force winds for about a ten to twenty mile diameter from the eye wall, but some could extend out to a hundred miles. This is true for category 1 all the way up to category 5 storms.

When you live in Florida, you have to do extra research to find out what the projected wind speed will be in your area. When a hurricane path moves just a few miles either way, it could be significant. It might mean the difference between getting hurricane force winds vs tropical storm force winds.

Damn that sucks.

I guess I didn’t relay my intent.

Shipping container is absolute last resort contingency plan if all else fails. House loses its brand new metal roof or gets leveled me and the dog are going to the shipping container. If the house maintains its integrity we are staying in it through the storm.
