It’s not all doom and gloom.

Considering Nvidia’s new Blackwell platform will process one quintillion floating point operations per second, I think it’s very likely we’ll see some positive things emerge from that. Definitely cures for cancer and Alzheimer’s are a likely bi-product. I can’t put a timeframe on it, but I’m 61, and believe I’ll see it in my lifetime.

Late at night, I dropped three decimals. We can't deny, the GDP before civilized man arrived 500-600 years ago was effectively zero. North America was occupied by warring, slaving, cannibalistic, environmalistically destructive tribes that hadn't managed to invent the wheel in 2,000 years.

But ask yourself. Do you want to believe the doom and gloom that things are awful, or your own lying eyes that we live in the best of times so far.

The point is... there is no climate crisis, only cyclical climate change as the Earth moves into one of its most productive phases in the cycle. There's limits to absolutely everything on this planet.
Atomic energy may well be fine to take us forward for the imaginable future but management of it and everything around it will be problematic as it inevitably proliferates around the globe. The money and greed will debase everything along the way and it will all become an even bigger cluster than it is now especially against the backdrop of declining population(if the estimates or forecasts are indeed correct).
To that, we need to be mindful of the fact that our economic systems and theories that underpin everything are based upon an expanding population and by extention increasing consumerism.
There's that finite thing again
To come back to Atomic energy we need to also do much much better than dumping nuclear waste in drums into our oceans
And clean up completely what's dumped there and deal with it in a much better fashion as we go along to demonstrate that we can put things right or at least make a really good attempt at it.

They dump the drums of the radioactive waste in the ocean because it's the cheapest option by a big margin but best of all it's basically out of sight and out of mind. How nice

Whining and complaining about human activity on earth seems like a buzz kill to me. I’m not participating in that pity party. There are lots of things to be positive about. If you want to lament humanity, that’s fine. But don’t expect everyone to be onboard.

The reality is we have sales people dressed up as saviors and the sycophants bow at their feet… even the most ardent informed capitalists understand the concept of market externalities and market failures. Environmental impacts have been borne by those not directly benefiting (and vice versa) for too long.

Back to the OP from the OP, I generally agree with what PADI wrote. I see far too many people wrapped up in their "social media" and you can actually visually see the brain cells being sucked out of their body into the phone.

I don't do any of that stuff, except for forums like this, and even then I try to limit my time.

And we have so many entertainment choices with streaming and PPV and whatnot, and as the choices increase the quality seems to have decreased. Even documentaries or "science" programs are getting simpler and more animated or with recreations, which are just insulting to me. Am I so stupid that I need to have an actor pretend to be someone who did something? Why can't you just tell me what they did, like, using like, you know, like, words?

I try to read more. Even just mainstream fiction, it's still better than 99% of the dreck out there. But even that has a continuing lower level of quality since it is so easy for people to self-publish on platforms like Amazon.

Engaging in "social" media is an increasingly antisocial behavior. Even a community such as this is really no community, but an escape from one. Here we have an opportunity to voice our opinion, whereas in the real world would go largely unheard, regardless of how poignant or prophetic.
It is an interesting irony, to use technology in order to decry it, but I understand completely.
I don't truly agree that advancements in technology have somehow made the world a "better" place, just different, and more dependent on its existence. The marvelous invention of television trapped people in their homes, and mobile devices have trapped them in their own skin.
Confinement cannot be forced upon a population, they must be convinced to demand it.

Wow that's a great bonsai this was one of my Grandfathers White Pine this tree was quite old back then,I took charge when he passed over 50 years ago now approx 150 years old and still growing strong for hopefully a hundred years to come looked after by my son and hopefully my grandson when I am gone.

The image that I shared was not my own bonsai. I could not afford it. But the beauty was irresistible - inspired me to loop back from technology to technical skill.

This is high tech in the most aesthetic sense.

The amount of soil is not all that important but how you look after the soil and tree roots are. With trees like the pines we trim the roots and repot around every 5 years on well established trees.

This Juniper Kyushu would be the closed in age to the one above, this one is well over 150 years old again one of my grandfathers. I remember it when I was quite a young lad my grandfather was a great teacher in the art of Bonsai been in my care for over 50 years since he passed.
