Just starting to learn and care about enjoying a nice cigar. I’ve looked through these pages and enjoy the cigar, watches and whiskey pics, but was hoping for a beginners list of maybe “top 10” to be on the lookout for. What to start with for a quality smoke, that is enjoyable relatively easy to find and doesn’t break the bank. Thanks

From the start, YMMV. Most of what I see in this thread are either Cubans or way up there in price. Assuming you're stateside and choosing between Dominican and Nicaraguan, Davidoff has some nice tins with smaller cigars that are great from either country. The Dominican is lighter than the Nicaraguan.

I find lighter wrappers tend to be milder, easier to start with.

Personally I like Ashton, but they tend to be pricier. One can get almost as good a smoke from the following less expensive cigars:

New World
Oliva
Charter Oak
Insidious
Africa

For a nice smoke with flavors added, you might try:

Leather Rose
Acid Blondie

Some like Baccarat, which is made by Davidoff but I found the flavor changed drastically and was not as good in the final third. Maybe needs time in the humidor.

Let the flaming begin. lol

Thanks or stepping up and putting yourself out there!
I’ve found some good whiskey and tequilas through the forums when a brand comes up enough times it must be good and worth a try… I’ll get my cigar list started.

there is so much personal preference that goes into it. No way to get there without some trial & error

When I have a cigar I'm looking to spend 45 minutes, maybe an hour. For me a 5 inch cigar does nicely. The ring gauge is also important. I prefer a robusto which has ring gauge of 50. I feel like that is thick enough to balance binder & filler tobacco. I enjoy how it feels, how it burns, how it draws.

As for shape, I just go for plain old parejo (not tapered). I feel these smoke the best. My preference is for a smooth, mild to moderate cigar, so I go for the Connecticut shade wrappers (lighter color).

Some of my favorite brands are Alec Bradley, AJ Fernandez, Oliva. It takes a while to sort it all out, and it's a wonderful journey. Enjoy!

Thanks Rick that is helpful... I've got my list going and have tried a few of the brands recommended so far. Including a couple of Oliva's that I enjoyed. I will take note of the ring gauge and see what I gravitate towards. It has been a fun learning process!

I’ve been trying out an app called Boxpressed to try to take notes on what I like/dislike. Still seems like it is MVP/beta phase but might be helpful.
