Hi there girls,

Lisa, I'd love to see some pics of your new floor, and anything else. Glad you were able to find a piece for the TV!

Elaine, that sounds like a big, ol' dramatic mess. He is a jerk, but she probably shouldn't have called his boss (although I can see why)! They need to stay away from each other - and tell her to stop writing him!!

Yikes!

Oh rats - I forgot to watch AI last night. Well, there's always tonight. Let's talk about movies!

What is your favorite actor in a particular movie?? For example, mine would be Colin Firth in the BBC's "Pride and Prejudice" . OK - not technically a movie, but a miniseries.

I'm gonna butt in here because I feel stupid, and a little peeved at my daughter's teacher! Here's the deal: when a student has a birthday, instead of a party or treats at school, the student is asked to bring a book to donate to the classroom. Good idea, isn't it? I emailed the teacher asking what book she would recommend. She replied that my daughter can choose whatever she wants; she knows what the class already has and what they would like. SO, we go to the bookstore. Together we pick "Walter the Farting Dog." She thought it was hilarious, and I figured, it's a free country, why not? So we bought it, and she wrote her good wishes inside the cover.

I emailed her teacher this morning to tell her what my daughter selected. She wrote back that it was not appropriate, and that we should pick something else. So now I'm stuck with a $16 book!

I don't really mind that we have to keep it, but now I feel stupid for picking it and a little miffed that her teacher would "ban" it from the school. It's supposed to be an open-minded, liberal, progressive school, so I must say this surprises me somewhat.

Opinions?

You're not stuck with a $16.00 book. You said your daughter thought it was hilarious, so think of how much joy that $16.00 book is going to bring her.....especially when she can keep it "all for herself"!!

Lisa, from what I've been reading about our school systems lately, the "liberal, progressive" schools are probably among the most conservative institutions around. Go figure.

Oh brother. I have to be honest - I would not pick that book, but my children attend Catholic school (can you imagine that scenario ). But, considering the points you listed (you consulted the teacher, it's a liberal, progressive school) - I'm not sure what the big deal is. Also, it's a bit ridiculous in a way. My daughter's first grade teacher reads Junie B. Jones stories to the students - Junie has a goofy sense of humour, uses "stupid" and "shut up", and likes to talk about underwear. So, Junie B. Jones is OK, but farting dogs are gauche? Hmmm, doesn't compute.

That title just cracks me up, BTW!

sorry to hear about the book Lisa ...

think the teacher just wants to be PC and says anything goes but in her heart she/he expects the parents to do the "right" thing .... notice that i "right" ha ha

Lisa, Lisa, Lisa... What kind of cornball situation is this anyways? Firstly, what's wrong with the good-old birthday celebrations? Donate a book? Singing Happy Birthday in class is obviously offensive for those who aren't fortunate enough to have one that day, I guess. Cake? Oh, no... sugar, eggs, flour, etc... all equal opportunity offenders for those who practice dietary disciplines touted in all the latest 'healthy living' books and mags. That doesn't even take into account religious beliefs, allergies, ethnic diversity, etc. Taking time to have a little fun in class? Some parent will certainly blame the birthday boy/girl and school system for having deprived their child of valuable study time, causing them to fail some test, didn't you know? Bringing a book w/'farts' in the title? OMG!!! What could you have possibly been thinking...

OK.....lemme toss out a thought on this. Junie B. Jones is one of my fav's. Cracks me up every time I read one of those books.....but....having spent the last 25 years in classrooms with kids of various ages, the very first thing that came to mind when I read Lisa's post was a vision of the boys in the class making a HUGE deal out of the "fart" thing". The girls would snicker demurely....but the boys would be out of control. (OK Moderator Guys, you know it's true!!!) Every time that book came out....even just lying around on a desk.......there would be the boys.......saying the "fart" word, MAKING the farts, "comparing" the farts, making underarm farts, making fart sounds with their mouths, and generally creating total classroom chaos, not to mention centering out and totally humiliating the poor girl who brought the fart book to school!

Nope.......that's $16.00 well spent on "home" entertainment.

You're a super mom, Lisa. What a lucky daughter............

Now...Junie B. Jones.....she's have just kicked those boys'...............hmm...can't say that here.

All I can add is that my daughter would not be snickering demurely - she'd be rolling on the floor!

It's.... just... sooooo... very... hard.... for .... me.... to... accept.... conformity!!! I admit, I knew the book might be questionable, but considering the school - it's so very loose - no uniforms, personal expression is encouraged, emphasis on creativity and individuality.... you can show up with a purple Mohawk if you're so inclined. I figured it would be accepted with good humor. Ah, well. Phoebe's second choice was a bio on Martin Luther King, Jr. Guess that one would be safe.

I'll have to keep my mouth shut - must admit I was tempted to remind her teacher it was she who advised me to let Phoebe pick the book, rather than give me some ideas of what to get.

Okay, I'll stop now. I'm all done. Thanks for letting me rant.

By the way, Nancy - my daughter is really "one of the guys" - she'd be right there with them giggling and acting silly.

girlie girl she is NOT. She's earned the notable distinction of being the only girl in the "all boys" club on the playground. Her best buddy is a boy (he presented her with a pet mouse right before Christmas), and she was the only girl invited to his birthday party. His mom called first to ask if Phoebe would mind being the only girl there, and she said, "Heck, no!" And she had a great time.

Oh, no! Do you think she's gay? (just kidding)
