The raccoons are cuties for sure - I'm surprised Mom decided that setting up a nest so close to people and dogs was a good idea!

Now, about that old Maple tree - I like old trees as much as old tractors! Any idea how old it is?

Thanks, Shannon. I wish they weren't there, despite the cute... but they're at least 10 feet up anyway.

The big maples are about 100 years old. We've been doing a lot of stabilizing and maintaining because they're really at the end of their lifespan. This maple in particular has lost a lot in recent years, mostly during windstorms, but it's chugging along.

Dbelle, did you guys get storms this evening? North of us the hail was up to 5 inches in diameter! We had a few hailstones up to two inches (lots of smaller hail - looked like snow), but no broken windows. Haven't checked my car, though. We parked it as far under the eaves as it could go and covered it in plywood.

Duckie update: still doing fine as far as we can tell. We could see little legs kicking when we candled yesterday.

Lisa the rain and wind have just arrived. The radar looks like we are right on the edge. Hoping for just rain! Hope your car is fine...looks like the dealerships in Edmond took a pounding.

Oh wow...:( sorry!!

We have some big trees down around the pastures, one fairly close to the house took out a cross fence, but I think most of the trees that fell or broke were dead already. I hope. I think we missed out on the hail...some people near us did get some hail damage too so I'm considering us really blessed. whew

The farther along this little duck gets, the more I worry...! I'm reading that ducklings (or any chicks, for that matter) can get right up to the hatching stage and then die either right before or during hatching, if the conditions aren't just so. My kids are certain this guy will hatch, but I'm afraid to get my hopes up too much. It's really a miracle we've gotten this far, all things considered.

It's due to hatch a day or so before my daughter's birthday - the daughter who found the egg. We have about two weeks to go.

Assuming baby ducky hatches healthy and strong, what are the plans for his future?

Well, if it is for sure a mallard, it's protected by migratory waterfowl law and we can't keep him - I wouldn't want to anyway, as we have no place to keep him safe and he deserves wide open spaces and water. There is a wild bird rehab place not far from us, and we plan to take him there, unless they have other recommendations about where and how he could be safely released.

The power went out for nearly two hours last night - I checked the incubator and the temp was dropping fast. I took out the egg, wrapped it in an old cloth diaper and nestled it into my shirt, then went back to bed with it until the power came back on!

Thanks, Cec. here's a little pic of the egg in the incubator - you can sort of see it the second row from the top, to the right of the thermostat:

I have become a MAJOR lurker on the "raising chickens and ducks" web sites!

Lucky ducky.

Ok my imagination is running away again...
I can just see the little duck head poking out from your shirt collar as he stays tucked in all safe and warm as you go about your day.
