Ducky update: a quick candling this morning reveals the little guy has poked his bill into the air cell... this means he's actually breathing now and is in the proper position for hatching. I could feel him knocking around as I held the egg. So all is going as it should and on schedule! He should be cracking the shell within 24 to 36 hours. I'm reading that this is a critical time as far as having the conditions right - temp and humidity - so please send hopeful thoughts this way!

Can hardly believe we've made it this far.

I'm getting some still shots and will post them soon - at this point there isn't much to see except a tiny star-shaped crack in the shell. He progressed pretty fast though, from breaking through the internal air cell to cracking the shell in about 12 hours... but I'm reading they can stay like this for another day or so.

Here are some pics for you guys. The first "pip" right at the end of the X. This was taken two hours ago.

And taken just now... the little guy is working hard and the crack's getting bigger:

Bill, this pic is for you. My husband loves old gauges - this one measures temperature and humidity. It's from 1954 and still works like a charm.

That's very cool.
You know, when I was a kid my father had a ham radio license. He had this old tube receiver and an antenna stretched out. When he left it was left behind. We moved but I took it and stretched a wire and used to listen to random people chatting around the globe (kind of like the forums Pre-Internet). I didn't know the frequencies or anything, I just turned the knob until something audible happened. I wish I still had it. It looked like some of the stuff in the picture of Dave's shelf.

I might be able to do this without an epidural.... but might go for a bottle of Mike's Hard Lemonade soon just to take the edge off....

Not completely... I'd been too afraid to make plans. But it eventually will involve our local wildlife rehabbers, if they'll take 'im.

Duckie was born at about 8:30 this morning! All looks great and he seems very active and vibrant, toddling around and preening his stuffed companion.

He's still got some shell membrane stuck to his back, but when he warms up and finishes fluffing, I'll help wash it off with a warm q-tip.

It's been 37 years since we last went through labor. I still remember the hours, but not the pains.
OTOH, we had our two grandaughters spend Saturday night with us. And it was a long one with the 4 month old, who woke up every hour and cried for her pacifier. Then she would go back to sleep for another hour. Our kids suggested we put the Pak-N-Play in our room to make it easier. Hah, that's the last time we do that.

The 4 year old woke up once but went right back to sleep.

When do you think your new one will sleep through the night?

To revive you I've brought Parisian macarons and a huge thermos of French roast coffee.

Congrats! Duckie looks lovely, but a little tuckered out!

I don't know! We could have a few noisy nights, for sure.

Lucky granddaughters - making memories with you. Hope you got caught up on your sleep.

With my human babes, against the advice of many I just took 'em to bed with me. We all slept better. Trouble is, you can't get them out of your bed. Like ever.
