Wow, I've discovered life on the rolex forum!!!!!
Thanks for the warm welcome ya'll! Lisa- cute duck! I had two friends who raised abandoned ducklings; One duck thought he was a chicken and was forever trying to hook up with the hens,(never went well!); The other became the family guard-duck and he dutifully chased and snapped at the heels of all visitors; Both ducks became integral parts of their adoptive families!
so, Lion, about coffee; I make a mean mocha chino, and have spent countless hours drinking them and lurking around on the rolex forum , until a few days ago, I finally joined, mostly to throw a huge thank you out to ya'll for the amazing advice I got and have used, saving me from countless trips back to my AD
I think my purchase story is detailed out in the new members forum, for anyone wanting to know that stuff; but to summarize, I have just switched from a ladies DJ, SS/Everose, to a midsize SS/plat. Y-Master, and I LOVE it, except I have to get used to it gaining time faster then my DJ did. I will post pics, once I figure out how to do that on this apple laptop...I'll drop by our local Apple store for a "posting picture lesson" very soon.
A quick bio- I live an hour west of Toronto; I am a busy mom to two kids, two cats, two horses and one husband. so hobby-wise, my watch interest, and this forum will fill up what space is left in my life!
So thanks again everyone, I will tell Manilagirl about this coffee shop, lest she wilts away on the Newbee board.

Yep, the coffeeshop's a fun place to hang around, but I know the General Discussion board would love to see your lovely watch, too. That's where most everyone posts pics of their new acquisitions. For some reason, people get used to browsing only a very few areas of the forum and miss good posts in other places. I'm guilty of it, too.

The midsize looks perfect for you! Very nice choice.

The duck has been such a treat to have around. He was a found egg barely a month ago that we decided to try to hatch.

Is your husband into watches? It was a friend of his that first suggested I get one, about 5 years ago. And believe it or not, they are still friends.

Well, I started replying, but then it got lost....so here goes again;
Your little duck is more then just a project now, I'll bet; They do become faithful pets...can you keep him?
My hubby, alas, is not into anything that costs unnecessary $, like horses and watches.... thank goodness I am free to dabble in life's little pleasures, as you only live once , right?
Once I get used to posting, I will feel more confident on the general discussion board; I must learn to swim in the pond before jumping in the lake; (I am figuring out how to post pics! thats a start!)
Thanks Lisa

Nah, we can't keep the duck though I wish we could. He would be much happier among other ducks, with lots of water to play in.

Heh - my husband's friend didn't actually suggest a particular watch. He just said, "Get Dave to buy you a Rolex!"

Didn't see that actually happening any time soon, so after my last baby was born, I treated myself to one. It was a two-tone rose gold and steel Lady Datejust. But I soon found the dial too small to read...so after having a 34mm Date for a while, and then my husband's hand-me-down Explorer II, my daily wearer is a 36mm Datejust. I'm happy with it.

I know; it takes a while to get used to the forum setup and all. I was on a poultry forum while we were incubating the egg, posting tons of questions, but no one EVER responded, so I decided to just research on my own. I did find all the answers I needed that way, but I felt just a teeny bit like I had done something wrong and nobody wanted to talk to me!

Your watch is beautiful! I had started out with the same ladies date just that you did, and i to found it hard reading. I miss the jubilee bracelet though- it did not show scratches like my oyster bracelet does. I luv the 36mm size! Do you find it more comfortable than your hubby's ExplorerII? When picking out myY-master, i had a hard time choosing between the full size one and the midsize; Currant fashion seems to dictate the man's size- but it's dial did not have the same sandblasted sparkle that the midsize had so opted for the midsize, and no regrets!
Good luck with your little quacker; maybe finding another home sooner then later would be good, as he's probably imprinting on his humans! Do you have a farm in your area? A place where there is a mix of ducks/animals and humans might give him some choices of who to hang with.
Cheers

How much longer can you keep the duck Lisa. Think we are all gonna miss him.

Big welcome here Michelle. That yachtmaster looks great on you.

When the watch is off your wrist you could try resting it on its side, with the crown down or up to lose some seconds.

Thank you. The DJ is a few years old - I stopped buying new after the first one when I took such a hit selling it. My first Lady DJ had an oyster bracelet. I don't remember at the time why I decided on that (might have been because I thought the rose gold would show up better), but I find the Jubilee more comfortable. This current DJ is very comfy. Actually, the Explorer II is as well, though it is on a leather strap as we didn't want to remove a permanent link to get the bracelet to fit.

The midsize YM suits your wrist perfectly. You made a good choice.

As for the little duck, yes, he's already firmly imprinted on us, but I don't know how we could have avoided it. We don't pick him up or feed him from our hands, but he craves closeness just like he would with his own mother and siblings, so we do let him cuddle with us some as it soothes and calms him. I'm thinking in the next week I'll contact the wildlife place. Hopefully they'll have some ducklings of similar age he can bond with.

I don't know a lot about imprinting, but wouldn't it seem that ducklings don't imprint forever or they would never leave their mothers?

Hoping to get some direction from the wildlife rehabilitators next week, Wes.
I just want the duck to have the best life possible. I don't know if they would entertain alternatives such as giving us guidance about releasing him, when he's mature enough, to a farm or our downtown river/park, or whether they would require that he be brought to them.

Our whole family will miss him, but we were so lucky to have had this experience with him.

What in the world makes you scared to hang out here? Just keep playing that piano for us....

Good morning Lisa,
You and your family are doing an amazing job with the little duck- he would not be "here" if you hadn't gone and hatched him ! He is getting a really good start on his life- and he is a lucky duck! because his path will be more interesting then that of your average duck.
In my first post in this coffeeshop, I had mentioned my two friend's experience with abandoned ducks; Both imprinted on whomever they hung out with as babies- the chicken-duck forever preferred his chickens; they even bought him a couple of female ducks and he would have nothing to do with them; the guard-duck, who was taken into a family, very much like yours- (even three daughters like yours!), has always stayed close to their home and them; he now lives on their front porch or right in their garden, and as I mentioned he takes mighty good care or them!
Both friends live in rural settings so its easier for them, but those ducks have great lives!
I truly can't see your little guy back in a wildlife situation, thats why i'm wondering about a farm or a petting zoo or something like that...he may be much more interested in hanging around humans...but I'm no wildlife expert either, so see what you find out- in the mean time- carry on you are doing a great job!

No, I'm not that cruel, just a pic from the internet(photoshoped)

Don't think the datejust comes with the ice dial. This is Ken(steelerfan65) platinum Daydate, and Jockes WG DayDate (Hope they don't mind me posting their pics) Certainly a grail watch.

Hi Carl from Canada, do you play music too?
Did you see the big Tight Rope Walk over Niagara falls last night? The best part was when Canada customs asked him to produce a passport! I was thinking"YES" , thats only fair, as we have to remember to bring our passports ,even if we just want to go to Buffalo for wings and pizza!

I play the guitar! It's not as fancy as the piano (especially when I play it) but it's somewhat relaxing.

As fot that big tight rope, I'm afraid I haven't seen it but I've read a bit about it. Needless to say I wouldn't try this myself (with or without a passport...)!

I'm already worried about hunting season this winter. Poor little guy would literally be a sitting duck.

So now's the time to do due diligence in finding the best situation for him. I'm just not sure how his instincts will guide him in the future, and to what extent his contact with humans will override those instincts.

Wish I lived in the country like your duck-mom friends do. Are their ducks domestic or wild breeds?

My mom lives on an acreage (same place I grew up) with a creek and two ponds nearby. Now I wish I still lived there! In fact, we had a mallard when I was a kid, another found egg that that our pet hen hatched for us. I fear something happened to him as he would spend increasing amounts of time in the creek and one evening he didn't return. In my child's mind I reckoned he had flown away with a flock, but as an adult I realize it was more likely that a coyote or some other predator got him.

Dave, the chicken duck,is a white peking, and Gary the guard duck is a mallard.
Do you have a local buy/sell/trade website? Ours is called Kijiji- I think its an Ontario thing, but you could see about posting a "duck to a good home" ad and see what comes up...a small hobby farm would be an ideal placement i think,(based on what I've seen of Dave and Gary's life)
keep us posted

There's a Kijiji for every province in Canada I believe (and even for different cities)!

Putting an ad online may be a good idea but one must be careful with the replies he gets, you don't want your duck to go in a family that will not take proper care of it (a good idea is to put a price for it, this way you can at least avoid people who want it just because it's free). Otherwise I'm sure there are a lot of shelters who will gladly take this cutie.

My husband works with two different women who have land and ponds. One even has a pet duck. I've asked him to see if she would like to adopt our guy.

Also, just got off the phone with the wildlife rehabbers. I could tell after some question and answer she was somewhat reassured we weren't doing goofy/harmful things to the duckling, but she said it's a good idea to take him to their facility "the sooner the better." They do have a variety of ducklings at the moment, some even younger than 5 days, so it's a matter of our little guy integrating with them successfully. I hope he would be able to - not sure I could bear it if they didn't accept him and pecked him! They do release their animals to the wild, so we'd never really know what would become of him.
