Okay guys, you've seen the tree, now here are a couple of other pictures from my birthday yesterday!

Supper was very good as we had steaks (I eat much less meat than I used to but it's great to have one every once in a while) along with potatoes, corn and some salad.

Here's a picture I've taken especially for you Michelle! It's not mozzarella but I know you wanted a picture! My mother used a couple of our own tomatoes in this salad (my father asked me to find out which ones were from the garden...).

And then we had the cake and here's where the fun begins...

Long story short, I purchased a watch not so long ago and the postman came to my house yesterday to give it to me. Since I was working, my brother and my father (both at home since it's their vacation) knew they'd have to sign and get the box for me. However, it seems like they had to go out for an hour or so and it was during that very hour that the postman came (what were the chances!? I had to get the watch today...).

As they were preparing the cake and putting candles, they told me they went out in the afternoon to buy it...

...Ladies and gentlemen, I had to wait for my watch another day for this birthday cake (allow me to remind you I turned 22)...

In all honesty, can you guess my father, my brother and I share the same sense of humor? I laughed quite a lot when I saw it I must admit!

And to top it, here are a couple of pictures I've taken with my lightbox. It's much easier to control the light with it and I think the effect is quite good (although I may not be the best to take good pictures).

And here's the watch I've ordered (let's call it the Spiderman Cake Watch! ), those pictures were also taken in the box but with a different background (it came with four little sheets that you can change whenever you want. I have a blue, a white, a black and a red one).

Carl, your watches are amazing- and that light box does them justice,; Quite a nice collection for an aspiring horologist!

Your Cake!! was it chosen because of all your recent arachnid encounters? Or is Spidey a favourite superhero of yours?

- the calabrese salad............its a good thing i'm going for groceries tomorrow......

Thank you Michelle! Those aren't my only watches but I've only tested the box with those ones so far.

As for the cake, here's the story I've had when I asked about it...

My brother and my father went to Loblaws to buy it. They had the idea of taking something with chocolate, just a regular cake (I'm not such a fancy man, I enjoy them all!) when my brother noticed this one...

He pointed it to my father and the man went "Oh..." (a bad sign in our family...). Now since we enjoy teasing each other my father thought "if it has chocolate in it, we're buying it!", unfortunately the clerk told him it was a vanilla cake...

At that point, like a tribe chief going to war with his troops, my dad look at my young brother and said "...Oh, heck, let's take it anyway!".

I must say it has nothing to do with my interest for spiders, they just wanted to tease me on my special day and since they didn't have any Batman cakes (my favorite super hero...) they went for this one!

P.S.: I'm glad to know you enjoyed the picture of the salad, we eat this one quite often and I never get tired of those delicious bocconcini balls!

I shall, Michelle, I shall...

In all honesty I've never been interested in having big muscles. Perhaps I'll work out someday to be a bit more fit (or rather less butterball-ish! ) but it's not one of my current projects!

Carl, I love those photos... especially the vintage watches. What can you tell us about them? The second one - is that called a "cushion" case? What kind of watch is it? Rose gold?

Very nice.

Thank you Lisa! I'm afraid I can't tell a lot about those right now but here's what I can tell you about both my chronograph and the very small one.

Chronographe Suisse

- Probably from the 1950's but perhaps a bit older.
- The case is made of 18kt rose gold.
- The movement is a Landeron 48, nothing very unique from what I've read but a very popular and regular manual winding chronograph movement. They've sold something like 3.5 millions of them in between 1937 and 1970 if memory serves.
- The watch is Swiss made, there is a stamp with Helvetia's head on the case back. This stamp was used in Switzerland since the introduction of the law on the control of the market of precious metals. I believe it proves that the gold is solid and it confirms the purity of it (I'll have to re-read the details on that one).
- The case is 38 mm but I've seen similar watches with cases as small as 32 mm.

No Name Watch

- Probably from the 1930's or 1940's but perhaps a bit younger.
- The case is made of 9kt gold, a rather unusual purity level but it has been used sometimes. That's what gives the watch such a rose color.
- The case shape is called cushion indeed. I've seen this shape rather often on vintage watches and especially in brands like Patek, Movado, Longines and Rolex.
- This one is very small, the case is only 28.5 mm.
- The movement is, again, a manual winding one with no complication besides a sub dial for the second hand.
- The hands are blued steel ones.

I'm afraid I can't tell much more than that, I'd love to do some research on those particular models to find out the exact year (or pretty close to that) of their production as well as a little background story regarding their movements.

In the meantime, I'll keep taking pictures of them because I really enjoy them!

Well, normally I'd be drinking in the Bar Carl.

But Raf has decided to refuse to serve anybody again.

Or at least I don't think it was just me anyways.

Hey coffeeshop people,
I've been tripping down this thread's memory lane, and I'm wondering whatever happened to Elaine,?
Does anyone know?

He's probably very insulted and bummed that you didn't send me a birthday gift!

Here, have some tea, it's just like a scotch on the rocks...but more tea-ish...

I'm afraid she left a long time before I joined the forum but perhaps Lisa could tell you more about her. As far as I know (and from what I've read here and there) she was a very nice lady.

Some say I'll drink anything.

Well, that's not completely true.

I have my standards after all.

It must have some alcoholic content in it before I'll even go near it.
