Sorry to hear you had to work, but it certainly sounds as though you had a smile on your face while you did.

I did.

I really love those shoes. They fit like they are bespoke, and are great to look at. I occasionally find myself admiring them... as if they were one of my watches.

Nothing fancy but some new Rancourt Bison slippers. Also received a new belt.
Still debating on the boots...

No

But should you decide too whatever leather conditioner you already use would work just fine.

No. The climate here in Sweden is harsh on leather soles, I have rubber soles on all of my shoes and boots nowadays. I have tried leather soles, but I only have it on strict indoor shoes now. Salt and gravel mixed slush is not good for leather...

Wes,

I vaguely temper Saphir having a product specifically for this. If I remember I check on it later and get back with you.

I have been using Bick #4 on my shoes. Available on Amazon. I used it upon recommendation of an antique book dealer on my expensive leather-bound books and it worked miracles without changing color.

Bick is a great product. I use it on a lot of leather items.

I think I've decided that treating the sole is a wasted effort. In wet, sloppy climates Dainite or Wensum are better sole options for bad weather and can be swapped out at the next recraft. In dry climates, why bother?

Bick4 comes pretty highly recommended as it one of the few conditioners that doesn't contain turpentine as one of the ingredients. Legolas is the other. Skoaktiebolaget recomended Bick4 as it also tends to prevent or help with water spotting. I've used a few different types but have used Bick4 for a few years now.

I also go with Dainite as a sole option whenever possible.

I live in Southern California so other than a bit of rain from time to time, my shoes aren't exposed to harsh conditions.

I don't know what to think about turpentine. Some say that it isn't good, especially with leathers like cordovan, but others say opposite. Nick Horween himself recommends VSC (which has turpentine) for cordovan. Reno also has turpentine. Both products are highly regarded for various leather types.

In general, I just try to use the least amount of product as possible.

And kerosene. Many of these high end conditioners are glorified lamp oil.

I'm certainly no expert and most of the time the Styleforum discussions on this subject were extremely hard to follow and not very conclusive. However from personal experience I found Saphir Renovateur to be a bit harsh and since it and VSC supposedly contained turpentine I stopped using VSC as well. Besides I found Bick4 worked quite well on water spots and it didn't contain Turpentine so I've been using it ever since.

Frankly I chose not to condition my soles because I was concerned that it might leave them a bit too soft. Anyway it doesn't seem to be something that most people consider necessary and as far as I know it doesn't yields that much benefit so I don't do it.

I've heard of Bick4, but have never really looked into it until now. It seems to be a good product. I'm always up for trying something new. I think I'll pick up a bottle.

It's fairly inexpensive as well. I purchased a multi bottle package from Amazon.

I use it on all things leather Wes. Saddle, boots, furniture, baseball mitt, ... it works on most everything (except suede, not sure I'll try that).
