The other thing I do on my leather-soled shoes (and my wife's) which we hardly wear now because we rarely wear dress shoes in retirement, is to have "skins" glued on the soles.

They are very thin black or brown rubber sheets that the shoe repair guys usually carry and they cut them to the shape of the sole and glue on, and put a couple of nails near the toe. They give grip to the sole and protect against water.

They are so discreet no one will know they are on unless you lift your foot, and even then they will think that is how the shoe came.

I have done this to all my dress shoes and they never wore out. You can also have them put on the heel but I never did this.

Good to know. I like the idea of having a single product that works on all leathers. I don't think I'll use it on my cordovan, though.

I had my cobbler put on a Topy sole on my color 8 Alden LWBs. It's a nice product, though I am not sure if I would do it again.

Here is a pair of suede loafers that I wore for years, in rain and snow:

This counteracts the only reason I have leather soles on my dress shoes, for dancing after the dinner!

Since I have no rhythm, dancing has never been a problem for me. Many years ago my boxing coach said I had WBS (white boy syndrome), meaning I had so little rhythm I was actually a tough sparring partner. I was so erratic I was hard to hit

My father, who was a master shoe repairer by trade swore by this, as soon as I bought a pair of leather soled shoes he did exactly the same as you describe. I mentioned this to the sales person when I was buying a pair of Church's shoes in Leeds, who was less than complimentary and said that it would stop the shoes breathing. I never said anything but would rather trust my (now deceased) father and his 50 years experience on the subject. He had shoes sent to him from all over the world for repair and was a proper craftsman.

How many of you are into shoes... (Dress Shoes)?

Haven't checked in for a little while. Some very nice additions by several folks since I was last here. A couple of new pair recently for me. Bought these Lobb chuckkas earlier this fall and have found that I am a wearing these quite a bit. The Charcoal suede is a very good color.

New Galways in Chocolate Brown Utah were ordered last week and should be here in a few days. Will be a nice compliment to my G&G Thorpes.

Those Chukkas are to die for. Do you spray with water repellant or just wear them as is?

Just wearing them as is. I do confess to checking the weather report and avoiding the wet days as much as possible. The Galways will work just fine for those days.

Water repellant isn't a great idea with suede. Suede is actually more water resistant than smooth leathers. If it gets wet, let it dry, then brush with a suede brush. All will be as new very quickly. Hosing it down with polymers doesn't provide any added benefit.

I just bought a blue suede bomber style jacket and the care instructions recommended that I treat it with water/stain repellent before wearing. So I gave it a quick spray. Figured it couldn't hurt.

I have always sprayed my suede shoes, which I have owned many, and it never hurt. Don't know if it helped. Anyway, was just curious since those chukkas looked so nice.

I have a couple pairs of John Lobb suede loafers. I just brush them off with a suede brush.

Not sure what happened, but I probably kicked the curb while I was walking and got some pretty nasty scrapes on my Ravello LWBs.

I put a small dab of cordovan cream over the scrapes and rubbed them with the back of a spoon for a minute. I followed up with a light brushing and a quick buff. Just another reason why I love cordovan.

Ouch, but it looks like the repair pretty did the job.

There are a few very faint dark lines where the scrapes were (they actually look worse in the pictures), but I'm thinking that as the cream dries, they'll lighten up. I will check in the morning.

A dear bone would have come in handy, but the spoon trick did a great job. The leather is totally smooth again. Just by feel, you would never know that the shoes had been scraped.

A deer bone is what I use as well. However I read on styleforum that a hair dryer will work as well. But you want to make sure it's not too hot and to make sure you condition them as well. Personally the deer bone works just fine for me.

Here's too the dark lines fading, but if not they don't look too bad. Besides it'll probably only add to their character.

I have plenty of odd scars on all of my boots. I wear them everywhere and playing with my god daughter is one of the culprits. Climbing trees and rocks, football and other outdoor activities might seem odd, but they will be fine.

You did a good job, no one, hopefully not even you, will notice.

The scrapes are barely noticeable now. They don't bother me.

My Galway research continues.

Dan, or anybody else, do you know of anybody that currently stocks Galways in the 202 last in country calf, smooth calf or utah?

Wow that's a tough one. Typically this is available on the 82 or the 64. I quickly checked the ones of the top of my head which where Edward Green, Leffot, Axels, and Khakis of Carmel. Edward Green is the only one which had a 202 Galway but those both where in suede.

I did find one on this site but I have had no dealings with them and it was only available in a few sizes:

https://www.superdenim.com/us/edward...-202-last.html

Still thinking and looking but typically from my experience this kind of thing is more of an MTO kind of thing.

Here's another that popped up in google. Here again I don't have any experience dealing with these people but vaguely remember them being mentioned. Not sure if it was a good or bad comment.

Sorry, Wes. The Galway Utahs I ordered are on the 82. Mr. Porter has some shown on their site, but they do not list the specific last. You could reach out to their customer support to ask if those happen to be on 202. I buy quite a bit of stuff from them and have found them to be an extraordinarily helpful group.

Thanks, Dan. I saw the ones from Super Denim, but their largest size is about 3 sizes too small for me.

I like the look of the 64 and 202 the most. The 82 is very sleek, but it may be too slim for me. I am spending xmas in San Francisco this year. I plan on stopping at the BB store to see if they have any Galways in stock so I can try them on. I think the Galways for BB are on the 82 last so I'll see if it works for me or not.
