Hey, ya'll. Just got back from my mom's house. She still lives on the acreage where I grew up. There's a huge old bartlett pear tree out front that must stand more than 30 feet tall, and it's just loaded with hundreds of pears. I picked some for her last week, and came back this evening with three grocery bags full to give to friends. Truly organic, too - the tree has been pretty much ignored since Dad died. No pesticides or maintenance of any kind for several years now. But the pears are still gorgeous. I've cut two open and no worms, either. Just wish I knew how to get the rest of them down - can't reach them, even with the long-handled picker. I accidentally knocked a few of them down and they got a little smashed, but that will be a nice treat for the deer.

I don't like them hard like an apple. I like them a few days later when they're a bit softer and juicy.

They really are pretty... I was surprised that neglected old tree could produce such beautiful fruit. The girls want to set up a fruit stand by the curb. I think we should just give them to the neighbors. They need to sit for a while in paper bags to ripen fully - they're pretty firm/crisp right now, and I'm like you, Bill - they need to be soft and juicy. I'm actually not certain when exactly to pick them, but the birds will start pecking holes in them if they ripen on the tree much longer.

Very nice Lisa, think you should do as you like and give to friends, rather than let your girls talk you into setting up a stall.

Don't give in to pear pressure.

Hal, you make a mean coffee, I should invest in one of those as much as I spend at Starbucks. I mean, I didn't even know they had a gold card, but they sent me one in the mail. Just pitiful.

Quadruple espresso?? I tried my first one a few weeks ago after a pretty harrowing brutal night of call (my friend : " aww poor thing - try this out " and I was wired for the rest of the week! And trolling watch forums all night instead of sleeping...) i dare not think what a quadruple espresso would've been like lol...

I was one of the few who somehow made it through med school and residency not afflicted by chain coffee drinking - mostly because I didn't like coffee breath :)

But then again I remember eating Cheerios with coke instead of milk with leftover pizza instead of pancakes in university so who am I to talk lol

You definetly should consider getting one. It makes an amazing coffee with the push of a button. Nespresso has over 12 varieties of coffee and roast and all of them are a cut above the rest. Is well worth it!!!

Believe me, I am a coffee snob. I only drink good coffee from Lavazza or Illy but let me tell you Nespresso is up to par.

Im a regular 'Starbucks' fan .. some pretty good coffee imo.. But I usually do the regular 'Pikes Peak' blend.. and of late, for this warm weather, I'll do an occassional 'Frapicino' .. which in my youth @ home was traditionally called 'Iced Coffee'.... - but I guess that, is no longer in 'vougue'...?!?!?

I can completely relate! I can't even drink a Pepsi past 2pm or I can't sleep. And definitely no coffee after noon.

As for my quad-quaffing husband, as a disclaimer, he isn't quite chemically balanced. He takes amitriptyline for cluster headache and without lots of caffeine, he would do little else but work and sleep. Edit: sometimes he'll tell you "work and sleep" is all he does anyway.

No fancy schmancy coffee for me, either. Boring black - and I like the Pike's Peak blend very much.

That was probably excellent practice for med school! I think residents and docs on call will eat anything. Either that or go without.

No doubt.. But what I found interesting, is that the taste of the 'Pikes Peak' blend in the US, ie Seattle area, tastes different than what I usually have in the AM here, locally in Burnaby BC ..- So it must be related to the water..!! - and on another note.. I noticed in the Seattle area, they, Starbuck's, do not provide a varity of 'milk' ..ie, skim, 1%, or cream. They only provided 'cream' or 'whole' milk'.... heavier in content...- hense some Xtra calories there..!!
.
I had to ask for 'skim'...!

Back from my apartment ladies and gentlemen! I just finished cleaning it and I've bought several small things for it. I've also moved my computer desk over there and must go back on Thursday to receive the bed I bought!

I hope everybody is doing well around here!

Dbelle: I'd love to try that tea you showed pictures of, it looks great and very special!

Lisa: Those pears...

Hal: Beautiful coffee machine mate! I hope it was a good one!

Glad you're back, Carl. Moving is such a chore, but pretty fun, too - making your new place a home.

It is indeed Lisa, especially when you're moving in a town that's almost two hours away from home...

I quite enjoyed the weekend though, my brother and my girlfriend helped me out and we did have a lot of fun! I just can't wait to get my bed, my internet, move the rest of my things and just enjoy my new place (not to mention the new formation)!
