Hey Wes! Thanks for the B-Day wishes for my Mom; she is here with me right now, (I'm trying to get her a little drunk..., er relaxed a bit!- she needs to do that!!) My dad is still a month away from getting out of the hospital- two steps forward, on step back....but he's slowly coming along.

How are parents doing these days? Have they sold their London place yet?

Are you off to a restaurant soon? Wonder what types of restaurants are popular in the US and Canada. We are mad here on Indian and Chinese food.

Yep they have a offer on their house here and for the past week have been going on lots of viewing for other properties. Obviously the ones they like are right at the top end of their budget, and they really wanted to have some money left over in the bank.

I have a Jamie Oliver cookbook,(which I LOVE!), and he says "I've decided to dedicate a whole chapter to curries, as over in the UK we love our curries. Most Brits need to get their weekly fix, and I'm no different!"

As for popular types of restaurants...that would almost make a good thread,as I'm sure they differ by regions; Out west- steak houses; Down east- seafood;
Here in Ontario, (and Quebec to maybe), we have such a multicultural apatite;
The trend seems to be Thai and Sushi right now...

I'm taking my Mom to a little "hole-in-the-wall" cafe called The Raintree: a very quirky, hippy type place which serves up a lot of girl type food- weird salads and vegetarian dishes;
Here is a tidbit off of the Raintree's website:

[IMG]Big Flake Horoscope (So Stinkin' True)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22): It be easier touching your toes if you keeps them close to your chest. Though they jingles more when you walk, using your keys for earrings is impracticable.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You cannot hear it but I am singing a song for Virgos. Full of mystic, aura shaking importance to the ultimate advancement of the Virgo individual's successful traverse. Only $9.99 + pst and gst plusshippingandhandling.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libras are festive trouser people. They like to chew all of the food on their plate, whether they plan to swallow or not. Libra's love to sing along.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio, your moon is aligned with Uranus, so things are moving well this month.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You draw your little cell phone from the fast action Velcro pouch and dial your pager number. It rings once, twice, again, click and you listen for the beep. You don't say anything. You hate when people do that.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): We are sorry Capricorn but to survive this month intact you will have to dance the gobblebottom and share the custody of Rudy the wonderpuppet.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You ride along on your bike when you meet the June bug of enlightenment and as you lie on the grassy boulevard beneath the stars you crave marzipan.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20): Player says go and game makes happy elephant fun before victory and child receives treat is tasting like delicious food or berries.

Aries (March 21-April 19): The cat that sat at the back of the shack took an awful good look at the spine of the book and he chin whiskered hmm with a squint of the room and said good enough for goats is good enough for me.

Taurus (April 20-May): You appreciate courtesy, as you are so often politely asked to leave. You really must give up licking your change.

Gemini (May -June 20): Oh yeah. Uh-huh. That's right. You won the Win a Date with Mike Contest with free complimentary golf pants, and the use of a sycophant for the afternoon. Mike Harris, your green fees at work.

Cancer (June 21-July 22): You sneeze and a butterfly pops out of your snoot. The butterfly sneezes and a bubble pops out. The bubble pops and startles the penguin. The penguin falls off the tree branch. The terrier grins.

Blimey are you sure it's a restaurant.

Yeah went to see one house with them, was amazing, all old features, parkay floors, fireplaces, old sinks in the bedrooms.(They currently have a new townhouse) And the back garden leads to a small wood, which is rare in London, but is very overgrown, and the pond was covered in algae.

Tried to take some pics of the ducks for Lisa, but they all ran away from me.

Obviously this house would blow the budget.

Hi Wes,
yes, it was a restaurant, ; The food was great, and the servers seemed normal enough- not too flaky!
Great duck pics!- I think they are mallards....Lisa might know for sure;
It's always fun to look at properties that are out of budget ,if you get the chance! Fun to dream,,,

They do look like Mallards, guys. What a pretty place... I'm like Bill... would love to have a little place in the woods with a pond for fishing. You could lie in bed at night with the windows open and listen to the frogs chirping. Croaking? Singing? Squealing?

When I was a teenager, my dad and I were out shopping and we saw this opal and diamond ring in a jewelry store window. At my urging, he decided to get it for Mom for Christmas, and it became one of her prized possessions. She had small, delicate hands, and the ring suited her beautifully.

She left a hand-written note in her will that it be passed on to me... I have kind of big, bony, farm-girl hands, but I'm so pleased to have it.

Thanks, Mom.

And also, for your viewing pleasure, here is a picture of a cicada, which is also quite a beautiful work of nature!

So I'm still here, yammering to meself... this is the first semi-relaxing day I've had all week and it's been nice to hang out here... though it's a little quiet at the moment!

Five-year old Violet brought these drawings home from kindergarten. Hope you will allow me the indulgence of posting them. Joan Miro-esque, maybe?

Good morning Lisa and Wes!
Lisa- what a beautiful ring! and such a great way to remember your Mom!

The cicada is cool- I've never seen one alive... We hear them all the time- Wes, they live for 7 years underground as big white grubs...skunks etc. love to dig them up for dinner... Anyway, when they mature they become the lovely creature in Lisa's hand; they are at the end of their life span at this point, and make lots of noise to attract mates.....then they bury their eggs....then they die....then the whole cycle starts again. (they sounds kind of like an out of tune electric guitar-a vibrating, shriek type sound) I'll bet Carl could produce some sound effect like a cicada.

Lisa....Violet's drawings are amazing! You've got a little artist there;- her lines are nice and swirly and relaxed!

Thanks, Wes. The girls are all infatuated with "My Little Pony" and the various characters in the cartoon. Violet was indeed drawing flying horses. If they have a horn and wings they're called "allocorns." Clearly I let them watch too much telly!

Cicadas are found lots of places... not long ago another TRFer posted a photo of one... he was from Australia or somewhere, I think! Around here, we have about 4 varieties. Some are mostly green, others mostly black (like this one) and some are brown and black and white. They're big bugs, too, but quite harmless. They have a very loud buzz and it's a sign of late summer to hear them making lots of racket in the trees in the evenings.

Hi, Michelle!

You definitely know your cicadas! Wes, sometimes in the evenings you can find those little nymph things emerging from their holes in the ground, where they will climb up on a tree branch or twig and shed their papery shell, let their wings unfold and then fly off the next morning.

Violet and Phoebe are rarely without a drawing pad in their hands, Michelle. June would rather read or play on the computer... she's more like her father!

How is your horse this morning? Feeling like his old self, I hope.

Thanks, Karis. It is a pretty thing. I don't know much about opals, but have heard they're rather delicate. If I wear the ring I will definitely have to be careful with it.

I learned all about those noisy little things at a nature centre, during a camping trip years ago!
Thats great V and P love to draw! Does J like to write at all? When my kids were little, I'd give them journals to bring on our camping trips, and I had one too; When we hiked etc, we could draw things and write about what we saw...I have some amazing memories now- its nice to go thru them once in a while.....sigh...they grew too fast!
Tay is fine today- no reports of tummy trouble thank goodness!
Did you find any treasures in antique stores yesterday?

Good morning Karis !
Lisa- opals love water! its a good idea to soak them once in a while in really mild dish soap and water;( because they are so porous), and then use a soft old toothbrush to rinse and clean .Don't ever put it in an ultrasonic cleaner- actually thats not good for emeralds either apparently,

Just pics from the website. Normally when I see an old fashioned interior it can look dated, but this one was very classy, stylish, with it's windows, coloured bath suites, fireplaces. Even the carpets were cool. Not sure when it was built, guessing 1920-30's. The big selling point was it backing on to a wood. My dad when he was young lived on an adjacent street and played in the wood, so is very nostalgic about it.

The pic at the bottom is what they have at the moment, town house on a gated estate. It's kinda gets to me they are selling it. But want to downsize a little and have some money in the bank, but both properties about the same price.

We only have one species of cicada in the UK, the New Forest cicada and there has been no reliable sighting of it since 1993, so think it is considered extinct.

Guess it doesn't like our climate.

By chance do you have a lot of skunks around?....they eat "infant" cicadas ...
Those house pics are great- lots of character to that property!
It nice that you are looking at places with them, Wes- I'm sure they would appreciate your input!
