Right around 1985ish the 5500 went to white gold markers on the dial. Some of these have a very slight yellow tint. True gold hands and dial indicies were somewhat common up to the late 1960s.

Hy Joe,
Thanks for your reply.
Yeah mine are slightly yellow, but the hands are steel, with the pointed ends. it is dated 1970. so fits right into your age zones.
cheers!

I love the look. Simple. Even at 6'2" and 260# with a 7.5" wrist, I think it is a good size at 34mm. (Had a 45mm Zenith chrono...ridiculous! SO done with oversize watches!) This example is from IV63, and has the wrong (but an original) USA stretch rivet bracelet with a 1957 date code. Ran fast but I made one effort to regulate it, and I think I nailed it on the first try: loses 2 sec with wear and gains 3 sec dial up overnight for a net +1 (probably needs a service). It's a 26 jewel cal. 1530.
I really adore the simplicity and symmetry of the Air King. Nice timepiece you have there, Time Exposure. Hopefully, I get to have one wrapped around my wrist soon. :)

Hey Jay,

With Rolex anything is possible. With the AK they used what they had in the parts bin for the most part.

Lody,

Great watch!!!!

Wow, this might be my new favorite thread, even though I don't own an Air King.
I sold one for a friend once, and while it was in my possession, I was blown away at what a great little watch it is.
One day...

This AirKing has been around me for a long time. It belongs to a friend, and I am after him for "taking over" since 1981 !

Just got my first AK few days ago (from a TRF trusted seller, OCROLEXGUY) and love it! Just right size for my wrist.

I am looking to purchase airking 114200 white dial with roman numerals. It is new and a co- worker is offering it for $3,400. He received the watch as a gift. Is this a good deal? I'm considering it but am unsure.

I thought the same.....always wanted sport models, until about a week ago. Fits perfect on my wrist. Perfect size that can go undetected. Love it! You should give AK a try...

Hy Lody,
Yeah a post sounds cool.
These borgel cases are under represented in my opinion!
they are so stylish and fit right nicely under the sleeve of a shirt /suit cuff.
When ive worn mine, albeit on a fairly ordinary strap, it always gets noticed, most unusually by girls (well ladies if im honest) too! reckon its due to the size and classic style, the 18ct helps too?
style and getting noticed by girls, theres two reasons to wear them eh?
ill try to upload some piccies but im the worlds worst camera operative!!!

Hy Rolex Explorer,
try chrono24.com for a guide to pricing!
seems different markets dictate wildly variation in asking prices.
so theres AK value to be had!! AK,s have been good value for a while, esp older 5500,s and it will not be long before they appreciate strongly.
happy to help,(if it is of help?? )
jb

Glad you like this thread RE. It is a legend. Although if you have the Explorer 1 I wouldn't trade that one for an AK
