Daytona SS (White Dial) - V

The white dial on the Daytona is the only Rolex I really like with a white dial.... It seems to always be a fight between which dial is hot the white is high demand one year then it goes to the black like right now.

I was seriously undecided about buying the white dial SS daytona as it is a very expensive purchase to a working man like me (just compare malaysia per capita income to other countries, ha ha) even when i was holding it in my hands. Then the AD suggested i wear it & look at my reflection in the mirror. To my surprise, the Daytona really popped & exuded such a classy presence, and immediately my decision was made & I bought it! That was 7 months ago, and i wear it every single day & I'm still stoked every time I see it on my wrist!

I was a big fan of the black SS Daytona. It's almost impossible to find a SS in Hong Kong. Couple weeks ago, I went into a Rolex AD, and the salesman said they have a white SS, so I tried it on. I told the salesman, give me an afternoon to think about the white one as I always wanted a black dial - so I search online and looked at pictures of the white ones.

After thinking the of the watches I already have, particularly a Sub LV 50th and a IWC Aquatime 2000 (black and yellow), I think I should go for the white ones.

Now, I am happy that I have brought the White SS Daytona. I still think the black dial looks great, but it doesn't pop like the white does, as most Rolex sport watches are black dial.

Not having a date is a little bit of a miss, but my iPhone does the job, and at least I don't have to worry about winding it every second month.

It is fairly expensive, but Daytona will just make your Rolex collection complete.

I absolutely love my white face SS Daytona. Got it for my 40th back in April and still staring at it like it was yesterday. The only negative thing I have to say is that the lack of a date is a pain. The watch attracts a lot of attention; at times this is great. Other times, like on a train, not so great. But I love it! I also love that it stands out in the crowd of Sub Ms that I usually see in my commute.

Sorry to hear all those comments about the Daytona, yet very valid. I personally dont like the size, I think it looks to small on most wrists. I do like the black face though. If youre that upset, sell it and get another maybe? Better luck with your next purchase.

Well read every word of this thread, some people should never buy a chronograph.
If you like the look of the sub dials, but don't need a chrono, find a triple date you like.

The nice thing vs. Sub or other date sporty is that it's not a dime a dozen like Sub. But the Daytona is becoming a little more frequent (especially in Austin where I live and there is a lot of $$).

4) DON'T LIKE THE BEZEL. Impossible to read small numbers, and let's face it, unless you are into car racing of no use. Also, it 'blends' into the rest of the watch, which is a disappointment vs more of a 3D effect of Sub or YM.

I think after this venture, I have clearly decided I need a date and a little 'bigger' presence on my arm (seems small when you put it on vs Sub).

I will look at Yachtmaster S/Plat. Might be a nice combo to what I am looking for. I don't care that the clasp is 'old' and that it's not meant for Yachting--which is good since I don't own one. I also don't drive an F1 car, but I bought the Daytona. I'm a diver, but didn't buy my Sub for the 3 times that I went diving in the past 5 years. I would suspect most people don't really use their Rolexes for their intended uses on a regular basis (unless you count keeping time of course).

Had a Rolex for the past 21 years, and will continue to own them. But I am REALLY disappointed in the Daytona.

Yes agreed with , i aquire it some where in May this year of this 16523 daytona, it really hard to read time and we are used to see the date from watch, eventually change it to 16623 YM this month.

Yes, the white dial on my SS Daytona is harder to read than the black dial on my GMT Master but I figure if you can afford a watch like this, you don't give a damn about what time it is.

Well I can understand your point of view, honestly I never really liked the Daytona, until they released the 116515, I just ordered the one you see with ivory dial, I know that many like better the chocolate dial on this model, but on the chocolate the time is really practically impossible to see, even when you have good eyes.

Of course you can't compare this one to a sub, it's a classy chrono, not at all a sport's watch… Anyways saw it in real, liked it a lot and ordered it, hope I'll like it as much on the long run...

I personally like the gold bracelet and case Daytonas. If you are fine wearing gold - I believe in India wearing gold is popular - I would definitely try some on. My wife thinks the YG and RG are too much bling for my style, so I will go back to an AD and let her look at a WG. I personally do not like leather straps on sports watches, but that is me.

Highly recommend WG in a Daytona. It shines just enough for me. But I am not a bling kind of guy.

However, the time is hard to read - I'm not that old! And the chrono registers are even harder to read! But did I mention it's a beautiful watch?

Thanks for this review. I always liked the Daytona, but I think I would reconsider getting one after your points. I use the date often and it is nice to have it handy and I do like the simple look of my old DJ. It isn't always about the price, but functionality. I don't race cars for a hobby, so why do I need a watch designed for it? Yeah, they do look nice though. Seems the prices are going down quite a bit on them. $9K for a SS is out there now in great condition. Where will they end up, now that Rolex has made tons of them? $8K? $7.5K?

I don't find it hard to read the time on both white and black daytos. Squinting to locate the hands in the dial is part of their charm.

This is my first post in this forum and after only reading posts your comments compelled me to finally jump in and participate.

I can relate to your post 100%.

I am 48 yrs old and will be making my 1st Rolex purchase within the next 3 months. I am torn between:
1) the watch I have been lusting after for 30 yrs (Daytona SS Blk dial),
2) the watch I think is the smartest & most practical choice (Sub C date),
3) and the one that I just fell in love with at first sight (GMTII BLNR).


1) NO DATE.
The date is very important for me. In my line of business I need to write down the date every day and having it in my wrist would allow me to enjoy my watch even more so. This is very important to me but not necessarily a deal breaker.

2) TIME IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO READ.
As already mentioned, at 48 I am farsighted and wear reading glasses. Legibility is VERY important. This watch is very hard to read for me. I think this is the deal breaker for me. If I can not tell time quickly then this watch becomes more of a jewelry item and less of a functional watch.

3) WATCH DOES NOT POP.
I think this watch is starting to show it's age. It does not look as modern as other Chronos. As a matter of opinion, Omega has several Chronos that look absolutely amazing and modern. I deliberated on buying an Omega with the 9300 Caliber but at the end I am going with a Rolex. Size is also a big issue. At 40mm this watch looks small in my wrist compared to the Sub C & the GMTII. The upgrades to the former two (although very minor) have made the classics feel fresh again and wear bigger and look modern. Not so with the Daytona.

4) DON'T LIKE THE BEZEL.
I have always struggled with this bezel and also the Explorer II 42mm. When compared to the new CER bezels they look outdated.

So, after truly struggling to get over my 30 yr old affair with the Daytona, I have decided I will not be happy with one if I get one. And I really want a Chrono because I use one for cooking all the time. But I will get an Omega 9300 as my second watch.

So my first Rolex will be between the Sub C date and the GMTII BLNR. But that discussion is for another post.........

texex91 I'm 42 and purchased my first Daytona almost 2 months ago (Nov 9th) and my experience has been completely the opposite. I can't get the Daytona off my wrist... I truly love this watch! All my other watches have been neglected since I got this watch. I'm sure it's a "honeymoon" face and I'll go back to my other watches but right now I'm enjoying it.

Under 30 years no problem reading it, and love it so much.... The size just make it classic, the blingy make me smile when i look at my wrist, most beatiful watch simple yet busy face...its like you have something that can make you smile on your wrist everytime you need it

Had a black faced SS for a week. I absolutely could not read the time. Combo of aging eyes. Used to a Submariner.

Traded it in for a SS white face. I knew going in that the silver hands would get lost on the white face. Ordered black (With lumin) hour and minute hands and red hands for all the other dials and big second hand.

Easy to read the watch with the color contrast and I'm loving this watch.
