If they go bang more than once with a single initiating action they are probably a luxury item I had a bit of early 1940's German engineering that was definitely a durable luxury item.

Canada Goose is quality
Barbour is quality

Both above also cater to the luxury market hence the blurred line.

Seiko divers are quality
AP divers are luxury

Seiko makes luxury pieces (grand Seiko for instance) but AP does not offer a sub-$1000.00 dive watch.

Fischer space pen is quality (reliability)
Mont Blanc is luxury

Red Wing is quality
Hand-made rare hide boots are luxury (don't know any specific makers here!)

I guess quality is something serviceable and durable- it stands the test of daily use and can be kept functioning as intended. Luxury is something unique, "special" that functions as another item of equal quality that can be acquired for less expense.

I appreciate both but tend toward quality over luxury.
In most instances, quality is luxury but not all luxury means quality.

LV started out as a quality manufacturer of steam trunks. Over time that brand has turned into a luxury brand. Now that it is one of the most valuable brands, quality has gone to crap.

Compare an LV bag made pre-1990's and one made today and it becomes clear as day.

My Montblanc pens, leather goods and cufflinks. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for my silver/SS bracelet.

Also, my Mulberry leather goods age beautifully

Things that we do not discuss here, my Eddie Bauer coats, sterling flatware, fine china, wife's duo boots, great grandfather's masonic ring, brooks brothers golden fleece polos, vintage straight razors, badger shave brush, and really not a luxury to most but my grandfather's snap-on, mac, proto, cat, and Matco tools.

Been trying to get my wife a bottle of pappy for quite some time now. Hoping 2016 will be the year. She likes her Middleton but not quite as much as the Jameson gold reserve.

Ferragamo - a bit embarrassed that I need to do some polishing - though the brown pair is 10 years old and one of the black pairs is 15 - resoled twice. Next to a watch and suit - shoes gotta have nice shoes.

Gibson Hummingbird and a couple Les Pauls. Also have an Essex Piano made by Steinway that probably isn't "luxury" but it's still beautiful years later. Final entry is a nice modern version of an item originally designed in 1911 by Mr. Browning.

Mine was 'custom' because of sizing and I wanted horse hide to wear in traditionally. It's about ten years old now I think and just starting to get soft enough I can bend my arms...

I have a few things, but what stands out are MB pen, my GMT classic, my old leather moto jacket, and some nice old bottles of wine. Not much, but still things that last for a very long time. Endurance.

My George Cleverly Bespoke shoes

6 pairs to date : - they will last longer than I will , a cocaine habit would have been cheaper but a treat to wear every day.

I enjoy polishing them to: it requires some effort, some concentration and a little diligence but no great thought - it is relaxation therapy.

Apart from my 70s Rolexes:

My early 50s Mont Blanc 144.

My 80s RayBan sunglasses.

My 70s and 80s Roland synthesizers and drum machines.

However, a steel Rolex was not really a luxury item in the 70s, RayBans were not luxury in the 80s and the Roland stuff were just excellent quality.

So, only the Mont Blanc left then...

Mont Blanc pens, shoes- mainly Allen Edmonds but John Lobb just opened a store here so that spells trouble. Saddleback Leather briefcase & wallet, Italian things that go bang, Benchmade knife, tailored/custom clothes.
