TBH, I personally wouldn't have purchased that watch based upon the seller's original photo, the first one in your chronology. Look at the difference in width between the left top lug and the right top lug. It shows you just how much metal has been removed during it's life and the result is lopsided and skinny lugs. If it was me, I'd return this one if you can and look for a better example if you're hoping to maintain your investment.

I fully agree but would add, that the left-hand side lugs (8/10) are thicker than the one on the right hand side (2/4) - even on new watches.
There is no way that we can prove that it was NOT laserwelded*, but it looks to me that he's simply taken off a lot of metal to even out the damage.

I'd ask for pics of the potential replacement watch and show it here to make sure that it's not the same trouble.

If you can - return for a full refund - take the beautiful MOP dial and take your business somewhere else
You should be able to find a decent and inexpensive TT Daytona somewhere else.

*Laserwelding is usually a specialist's job so the damaged case has to be moved to somewhere else - which usually takes some time.

Agreed, and sad. This is a txt I sent the dealer this am.
Stuart. I haven't slept one wink of sleep last night. After looking at photos of my watch from before I brought it in to you, my watch now clearly is a different Rolex. The lugs are now polished where as they had a mat stainless finish when I brought it in to you to have Dial worked on. The lugs have been polished down to remove the dents that were caused and admitted to by your establishment in the service work of the dial. This watch has been through the ringer at Gold Fever and I don't want this piece. It's been altered, scratched up, polished, dented in 4 equal spots and now filled down again with a polish wheel in the inside and top of the lugs to fix the damage done by you. I'm coming in this morning with the altered watch. I'm taking you up in your offer from 7 days ago, which was if I wasn't 100 percent satisfied with you fixing issues, I could take something else in trade. I am into this watch for 9100 and 856 to you , so total of 9956. I want a Rolex that hasn't been polished , scratched , dinged up. Or just write me a check for 9956.
Thank You,
Steven Simon

Question-- if the lugs were ground down to fix the damage, making them thinner and oddly shaped as others have stated, wouldn't you expect that the bracelet would not fit well, with space/gaps between the bracelet end links and the lugs? I'm not seeing that, the bracelet seems to fit well, so not sure how the lugs could have been ground down. Thoughts?

i think it's more of a re-profiling. For starters, the right lug was already thinned down, and we can see that. That prior thinning was on the outside face of the lug, so the inside, which contacts the endlink, was not affected. As to hiding the damage caused by clamping the case in a vice or other tool, it looks like the lugs now have an overall more convex or "croissant"-shaped profile. Metal was likely removed from the top inside corners where the clamping damage happened, but, the internal walls of the lug were left alone. Which still allows the end link to fit inside securely.

I think it looks fine. You are so worried about this watch, what it was, what it is, that you have lost all enjoyment from it. You most likely don't see the beauty of the watch, or even check the time; so focused on lugs and polish and all that crap. Its a beautiful watch. wear it and enjoy it. If you cant do that, trade it, but honestly it looks fine.

So did you end up keeping it, or is this a new Daytona with the same MOP dial?

What was the outcome of the text message that you sent? Did he offer any kind of compensation for grinding vs laser welding?

Killer dial! I would ask the jeweler to make it right. If he refuses, then send it off to RSC and they will make it right. No need to get hosed on a flip to a new, used watch. Keep it.....but first allow RSC to make it right.

The lugs on the pusher side of a Daytona are always thinner as the case is asymmetrical. If you go to the Rolex website, you'll see the same thing. Lugs didn't look to bad to me in the original photos.

Actually in the Zenith Daytonas like the OP has the lugs are quite evenly balanced compared to the modern ones. It still looks good for its age but there's been some polishing over the years.

The watch now looks OK. But I would not go back to the guy any more. Its obvious he doesnt know what hes doing or at the very least isnt very good at it. When its time for a servicing send it off to Rolex to make it correct again. Only problem there is I believe this is a aftermarket dial. Rolex will have to put the original dial back in or they wont work on it. If it is a real Rolex dial then no worries there.

dude, my wife once got bent out of shape and threw my Rolex against the wall which not only took plaster off the well but left a dent on the side of the case so deep it can't be polished out.

at least you can choose a new watch maker!

Daytona Nightmare!! Thoughts??

As crazy as this may sound, I sent this watch back to the original dealer from Florida that i purchased it from. Another issue I didn't notice was the little hands were scratched up! The dealer said they looked awful on close inspection. They are buying the watch back from me at a fair price and will take care of the hands and resell the watch! I plan on rebuying a much more current model that has no polishing and issues! My lesson learned here is never to go back to this local guy for anything and will never recommend them for anything!! Also RSD will be the only people that touch my watches from here on in... Thanks for support guys!

Also they are sending me back the after market MOP dial and I plan on going back to local and getting my money back on the dial. That's for sure. The Florida dealer is sending me photos of the scratched hands for evidence.
