Takes me back...

I watched Bob Ridley tear down my red 1680 while we chatted and I looked over some incredibly rare pieces he was working on.

Looks like good work and a fantastic watch!

Congrats on the job, nice to see you protected the lug holes when polishing. Seen lots which are completely ruined after using the wheel.
Succes with the next step in your education.

How long was it last serviced before you aquired the piece? Was the movement still in good shape? Had the movement ever been serviced at all?

Beautiful work! Just curious, when you're polishing/cleaning up the clasp, do you work around the coronet to keep it from melting into the rest of the clasp? Or do just go over all of the material minimally ?

Yes it was serviced before, but I don't know when. And I didn't acquire this piece, it is a watch from a costumer.

I first use an 'artifex' wheel to buff out the scratches, I work around the coronet with this. Then I use the 'bufflex' which is a softer almost scotchbrite sort of wheel and this is for the fine finish, this one I do use on the coronet but only with very soft pressure.

Same with lugholes and helium escape valves, use different angles and don't use too much pressure or the round hole will turn into an ugly oval.

Nicely done including the polishing. I say to those critics of polishing, not everyone takes pride in having beat up looking stuff. Ratrods are great as a novelty but rat watches not so much in my opinion. This work shows a decent restoration can enhance the look and value of a watch.

I love the work.
Were the hands replaced? Did I see different patina to the dial?

Thanks Bas.

Do you find many 1575 movements with 1570 stamped bridges? Although they are essentially the same movements apart from one thing, Rolex in that period seems to swap in whatever is at hand causing some confusion, do you agree?

The ones I've seen had it and the one I worked on had it, don't really know if there are any 1575 bridges around. We certainly don't have any 1575 bridges in our inventory.
