My first wife and I divorced amicably without the need of a crew of lawyers. I hired an attorney to do the paperwork and it was all over in less than 60 days, including the 30 day cooling off period.
I don't remember the grounds, something like she tortured me, but it was quick and financially painless. |

One of the guys I meet up in Philly, Bill (aka anothernewphone), was telling me his wife works with a lady that has everyone's ring in the office ranked by size and value. To me, that kind of behavior is a huge red flag. Crazy.

A lot of (financial) pain in this thread. I guess that is why everyone says you should get married...once.
Every situation is different I guess. |

Funny how in the temporal world things like money, social status, sex and material belongings tend to take precedence over just about everything else. Chances are this couple wouldn't be disputing over a Citizen EcoDrive. From the perspective and standpoint of most mortals, perhaps the material world and its vast array of objectified trophies represent all there is to be seriously considered (at least until something better comes along). There was thread awhile back about the Dalai Lama owning and wearing a Rolex and Patek Philippe. Imagining now that perhaps even he cannot transcend time and space (although he was fortunate in not having to deal with opportunistic ex-wives).
Back to topic. I once knew a 747 airline captain who after three divorces (and four children) was paying so much in alimony and child support he was forced to share an apartment with some college kids. Lost all of his house(s), cars, boat and yes, a now vintage Rolex GMT/Pepsi. |

Plus both parties need a lawyer and the one requesting the pre nup usually has the means to pay both fees.

That makes sense. My wife and I didn't have a ton of assets when we got married so it didn't make much sense for me to pursue a prenup |

I had a prenup twice. My religion requires a marriage contract, and it has to be written, and witnessed by people of good character from both sides. Since both parties share the religion, there's no shadow of discontent created by engaging in the process. Marital expectations are agreed to in advance, as well as dissolution of assets should we decide to part ways later. While the requirement is shariah, the contract is written by local lawyers to ensure it meets all the technical requirements. It made my first divorce blissfully easy to resolve.

My brother is a commercial real estate lawyer. One of his firm's partners, who had started his career in family law, agreed to do a prenup for a major client. They did the work for free because the client had generated millions in fees for the firm over the years. The crazy thing is that the price would have been over $30,000 based on billable hours and accounting fees |

prenups can be invalidated for numerous reasons. but it is contract law 101. just because and terms of the agreement are "unfair" doesnt mean it is invalid if entered into absent of fraud, duress, coercion etc. also you cannot waive things against public policy such as child support. likewise the right to temporary alimony/support and temporary attorney's fees cannot be waived in an agreement while the the dissolution action is pending.
