Very thoughtful gift. I suggest white, which I think is more elegant and very classic.

OP made it complicated. The way he is planning and talking about this gift arguably runs afoul of federal anti-discrimination statutes. Surprising coming from an attorney

Well in my opinion, you are an idiot. So let me enlighten you mister "I like to call people I don't know sexist." State Bar ethics rules prohibit me from sharing the profits of law with a non-attorney. So I can't pay her a cash bonus, or write her a check. However, I am permitted to buy her a gift, and she has made it clear that she has a huge desire to own a real Rolex. You got any more insults to send my way??!?! Oh, and by the way, I made nothing complicated. YOU did that. Nothing about gifting a watch to my one and only employee even enters the same planet as a federal anti-discrimination statute. That's probably the most ignorant thing I have read in years. I try to reach out here in good faith to find the best colored dial, and instead get this kind of nonsense. You are an idiot, and I'm being kind. Perhaps you could try and be less ignorant when hurling insults at those that you don't even know, nor have ever met.

I had a co-worker wearing a DJ with jubilee bracelet, fluted bezel and black dial roman numerals. I think the black dial looked very very nice on her and was part of the reason why I finally pulled the trigger on the sub. However, when I am planning to buy my wife a rolex DJ, during the discussion my wife prefers the silver dial. The reason being black is to masculine, white is not versatile while silver is great for any colour. Now my wife has a decent job in the cosmetics industry (actually earns a little more than me), I wouldn’t mind at all if she received a rolex from the company. However, and I am trying to put it the least offensive way possible, I would question her if she had received a rolex from her direct superior. Let me try to put it this way, if my wife had received the rolex during an official function in her office with her colleagues present and a speech from her superior, thats ok with me. If she had received the rolex just like that as a gift from her boss, that would set a lot of questions in my mind. Simply because it is such m expensive item. I hope Im not offensing anyone in the forum here.

Saying, "I'm giving you a bonus for your excellent performance this year - you've completed your designated duties far in excess of my expectations" could very well fit into the framework of a compensation plan. In any event, you figure it out, just thought I'd throw that out there for discussion purposes.

Very nice gesture - I'd go with the white one for a woman. As an aside, I thought many of the thoughts others did here as well. Do you know she wants a Rolex (sounds like it), do you know she wants a 31? I like the idea of bringing her shopping to help you pick out a watch for a wife/girlfriend/friend/whatever and then letting her know she's the friend. But not that kind of friend. lol.

Black is classic and looks super sharp.

I know this is probably old school, but for the DJ 31, I love the jubilee with the fluted bezel and the oyster with the smooth bezel.

I love the crazy posts I get to read here!

The top quote is just plain weird. No words.

Second quote. Are you insane? He talks about her loyalty and performance, and notes that her and her husband are well off and he thinks she would prefer a nice watch to just a check. Yet, you accuse him of engaging in sexist behavior. That's sick.

I really hope your crazy feminist extremist-sounding comments about sexism and discrimination are in jest. Although I doubt it.

I've voted white, but what I suggest you do is to put the pictures of the three watches in a box, wrap it beautifully and then let her choose.

Wow I was half joking but do find it a little sexist. And not because of giving away a watch -- plenty of companies do that -- but because of considering the husband's job status. Why should that have any bearing on the type and amount of compensation she receives?

I doubt an employer say, "Tom has been my top sales guy for years, and I want to reward him. But his wife's a doctor, so he doesn't need a check"

Quite a nice gesture of appreciation! I think the black dial is the safest pick for a surprise gift.

Take her to go pick. She still experiences the surprise element plus you guys get to share that feeling of victory together for just a tad longer and as a bonus she chooses exactly what she wants. I would just make sure to distinguish that she's not your SO if the topic was to come up. Wrong ideas might be had even if the intent is not there, at least that's what my crazy head says to myself. Good luck!

The white dial stands out. Will bode well with work attire and the white is the sportiest of the options to dress down and casual with.
She'll be thrilled regardless of which you choose. Hats off to rewarding those who help make your job and life a little (or a lot) easier.

What a funny read this has turned out to be. FWIW, if I were the OP, I would give her a note setting out the 3 options and undertaking to pay list for whichever one she chooses. She’s hopefully old enough to find the way to the AD herself. That would take care of the awkwardness, if any. Both choosing for her based on how the watch looks on a swimsuit model or taking her to the AD under some ambiguous pretense strike me as not optimal in a professional relationship.

Which color would you prefer to see on her wrist? Pick that one.

If it was my decision I'd go with a silver diamond dial with a fluted bezel on oyster bracelet.

Since she recently took a black dial, this must be the color she likes most and she will be able to replace her current watch with your beautiful gesture.

White for sure. If you feel that there may be any akwardnes between you and the husband, you could just get ahead of it and ask him directly if he would be ok with it. Cards on the table and all that.
