I love mine and it is all you need really. No rotatable bezel, no numbers on the bezel, no 4th hand, no cyclops. Only legibility, balanced aesthetics and a sporty Mercedes hand. Oh and that lume always makes me smile.

Nevertheless in the future I will sell mine off to get a Day-Date but I imagine when I am really old I might get an Explorer again. Because it is all one needs.

“It’s in the damn article” so if Hodinkee says it, it has to be true and collectors should follow?

Again, “known collectible” in what sense? Cause they said it is or you? The only known factor is the difference in gold hour markers and short hands. It’s not any more popular than the current MK2.

If your only deciding factor is a 5 year production run (which is still a large number produced) then it’s clearly nonsense and fictitious hype from a few.

As of right now, the facts are the MK1 has been produced more than the MK2. Its resales value are par and there is no shortage available.

If you want to measure collectibility maybe you should wait see how well it compares to it’s alternative first. As of this moment both versions are pretty well liked. And many do prefer the lumed hour markers and larger hands. Everyone seems to assume that the current dial and configuration will remain in production for a period of time. Rolex can easily update the current movement and reference it as 224270 and suddenly the MK2 214270 was only in production for 3 years.

Hodinkee like it or not is a tastemaker in the watch world. Factual.

For me the proportions are spot on. I think the case size/lug width ratio is absolutely perfect on the 214270.

IMHO, I think the 36mm Exp 1’s lug width is too large for its smaller 36mm case size.

But at the end of the day, it boils down to personal preference.

Not my favorite Hodinkee review but a great watch. Still prefer the 36mm though, but I have a small wrist.

I don't see how they could have been more wishy-washy about it actually. They've made much more definitive statements about other models.

From the article:
Either way, with production spanning only five or so years, this is a notable reference and may prove to be collectable some time in the future.

It should have been 38mm, a size more in line to the heritage of the model.

Also, I don’t know if you noticed but the Explorer wears a lot bigger then the OP39mm
Its the exact same case. It's one magic watch that Explorer.

Great review. Quite exciting to hear Hodinkee’s thoughts on my favourite (and only) Rolex. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. It’s definitely a keeper.

+1, it's ridiculous. I for one am not going to suddenly prefer the t-rex in 20 years time because of it's perceived obscurity.

Not all unpopular models become the vintage daytonas of today

Short Hands, Gold Numerals. Classic, Clean Collectible. Hodinkee has it right. I own both.

Lol Hodinkee strikes again!
Explorer 214270 mkII
Some finds it too big, some finds it too small, some finds it elegant, some finds it too boring...

It’s a sports/tool watch, I prefer the 39mm size compares to 36mm, wrist shot pics are always misleading, I thought the 39mm was too big for me, until one of my friends took a picture of me (was wearing the 214270), i suddenly understand why rolex make it this way. It’s just perfect.

36mm might look very pleasing in wrist shot photo, however from far it just looks tiny, I like smaller dress watches, not small everyday GADA watch, the Explorer is my everyday watch

Not to mention the 214270 has the better oyster bracelet.

Owned it almost 1 Year now. Once in a while I see nice pieces on display, then I look at my 214270 on the wrist and thought: nvr mnd, let’s move on

I love this watch and hope to own one some day. However, this whole notion of a watch being perfect for “exploring” the world around you (and especially the city he was walking around in) is ridiculous.

ANY watch at ANY price point would survive a walk through downtown!

FYI Fratello Watches has some articles on the Explorer that are just as, if not more comprehensive than the HODINKEE piece.

Interesting perspective - I thought the DayDate was for when we get really old! Haha. Congrats on owning one. Enjoy!
