It’s pathetic, however those who use silly names will defend the use of them and see no harm in it. When I hear sales assistants using silly names it truly is cringeworthy.
There are three camps here: a. Use silly names. b. Don’t use silly names but see no harm. c. Silly names are pathetic. Age doesn’t seem to have anything to do with it. These are three even groups age wise. Perhaps you could define the three groups better by length of time in the watch hobby rather than age..with newbies in camp a. etc... |

I use the odd nickname - Hulk, Pepsi, Smurf and really don't see a problem. However I find it easier to type BLNR rather than Batman or CHNR rather than Root Beer.
To be honest I find post like this constantly complaining about the use of such nicknames more annoying than the names themselves! |

I hated the Hulk nickname...until I didn't! I just found it easier to say that than anything else.
Funny thing is, I always refer to my 16710 as such - never pepsi.

I don’t mind nicknames, but batgirl is silly IMO.
I feel like we are missing an opportunity to call the Pepsi a Superman. That way we have the Hulk, Batman, and Superman. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If they redesign the Hulk in 2020, can we start calling it the Ninja Turtle 30-40

I have no problem with nicknames. I am firmly in the over-40 crowd (although with the maturity of a 16 y.o. if my wife is to be believed) and will switch between ref numbers and nicknames depending on whom I’m talking to. Nicknames are just better known by most outside this forum and it keeps me from sounding too esoteric.
HOWEVER... I have a tremendous aversion to, and it truly hurts my soul, when people use the nickname/term “Rollie”. Oh, and while I’m here, can I start two new ridiculous nicknames just to upset those who really hate them? How about “Darth Vader” for the black DaytonaC and “Stormtrooper” for the white dial DaytonaC. If someone hasn’t already claimed these, then you’re welcome... |

I'm almost 70 and I find that some nicknames are useful and that some are stupid and insulting. Some are not specific enough to for use without further elaboration, for instance Pepsi, which can cover a plethora of references introduced anywhere from 1953 to 2019. Personally, I think that the use of reference numbers, like 16710BLRO or 16610LN, to be much better choices for forum use. In informal, face-to-face conversations, nicknames are fine, as long as everyone knows what's being referred to.

Personally I think the nicknames are ridiculous and I certainly wouldn’t ever use them. But, if others want to, fine.
