Keep the Black Bay and get the Rolex. Figure out how to do it and go for it. In the end it is not a lot of money in the big picture. Don't overthink it.

I understand the OPs situation as I was in the same boat but fear not! I have worn Rolex for about 18 months and nobody has noticed a thing. The only time a colleague complimented my watch it was a vintage Longines and she asked if it was a Movado. I understand the feeling that taxes pay your salary but what you do with your own cash is your business and you’re a taxpayer too.
I don’t think you need to worry whether your explorer is under the radar or not, if you feel good with it, wear it. :)

An Explorer II is not a showy or blingy Rolex. Very much has a tool watch vibe so I think you will be fine. Go for it!

The good thing about watches is that most people don’t know anything about them and, those that do, either think they’re fake or, like us, know they’re a sign of good taste. I say go for it.

Teacher with a Rolex?
I can understand your reservations but you’re overthinking it. It’s a great everyday watch. However, If it were a solid gold day date.. that would be a different story lol. I say go for it because the itch will never go away until you do.

Wear it and enjoy it.
Don’t give it a second thought. (I’m a teacher, who doesn’t teach... But, for what it’s worth, I wore a 14060 as a student teacher back in the day.) |

Having been a former educator I wore a Rolex virtually everyday of my 10 year career and honestly it never really came up. Only you know if you have the available funds to buy a Rolex, that said don't not buy it because of the teacher thing.

Definitely! When I do work with kids, I like to be able to show in the flesh that they have a chance to have those kinds of things if they stay on the right path :)

if someone asks just tell them it was a gift...that's all they need to know...even that is a bit much but that will answer they're question. If someone asked..

You have earned it. Be proud of your own watch you bought with your own means.

An Explorer 2 looks great on a teacher. It's not a blingy watch by any means. If you wore a 6-digit Sub, GMT, or Daytona, some parents might think you are wearing a fake Rolex and you would look like a phony and possibly be made fun of. Nobody will think your 5-digit Explorer II is fake. I think it is the perfect choice for a teacher!

The real question is
‘Is it safe to wear a Rolex as a teacher?’

If you have reservations, then I'd recommend not wearing it. The opinions of strangers on the internet probably aren't going to allay your concerns. You'll end up leaving the watch at home.

I wouldn't sell the BB for a 16570. Just save up longer. And buy and wear what you want. You worked for your money. As long as you can afford it, who is anyone to tell you how to spend it?

I wouldn't sell the BB - not when it was to mark becoming a dad.
Just wait until you can add the explorer |

My Geography teacher in HS used to wear a Rolex DJ, thought she was the coolest person ever! Go for it!

Do whatever you want, I wouldn't worry about the kids or parents at back to school night...
But, what sticks out to me most is how much the 16570 has gone up... gotta trade the Tudor and add $4k whoa. Seems like just a few months or last year they were $4k

You will probably motivate some kids to want to pursue teaching as a career. As a role model that makes a good enough living to be able to afford a Rolex, more kids will know that teaching can equate to obtaining the finer things in life. Go for it!

In a public school, no I wouldn’t wear a Rolex if I was a public school teacher. I would wear any other luxury watch, even pieces ten times more expensive, but never a Rolex because of the message it will send to parents and other teachers. Patek and others wouldn’t send a message because most people have no idea what it is. I would stick with Tudor or perhaps look into one of the lovely offerings by Blancpain, but would avoid Rolex.
It also depends on the school though. Where I live in Northern virginia, you have Ferrari’s picking up kids from public magnet schools. Go a little deeper into DC and you have some extremely violent and poor quality inner city schools. So obviously.... it depends. And if you bought your Tudor as a milestone watch for become a dad then don’t ever sell it. I bought a TT Sub when I got back from Afghanistan in 2008 and regret selling it because it was marking a life event for me, even though I had no affinity for the watch. |

Rolex symbolizes achievement. If you bought it with your hard earned money why should you care.
