If you really need it and have the funds, why not?

But for me, I’ll check other brands for same amount of money

People saying they will never pay over retail and the watch is not worth it, etc. Fast forward five years and the same conversations but the price is close to 3x retail on NIB. I hate to break it to everyone but something is worth what people will pay for it. Period, end of discussion. You may not pay that for it but someone is and does. And I will not cast dispersions on that person because it is their choice.

Ultimately we are having another discussion about money that is associated with watches. Which is fine but just call it what it is. Between the never ending whining about not being able to buy from an AD, the entitlement mentality that life should be fair and the criticism of legitimate business people, our Trusted Sellers, it is always good for a morning of entertainment. I bought both of my SS Daytona-C's from DavidSW and paid a fair price at the time. No issues, great service, watches were here the next day by 12 p.m. and I have enjoyed them. When I sell or trade them, and I will at some point because that is what I do and enjoy, I will shop them back to David and if we can agree upon a price I will have my money the next day or some other watch[s]. I think this is all fun, my hobby.
No denying your money is safe. These hot models might not return exactly what you pay for them at their inflated price but you won’t lose much if any money if you trade them in. That’s the saving grace of all this. If the watch is worth that or not your money is relatively safe. The market may self correct but it will never burst.

I love my black ceramic daytona. Probably my favorite watch. I got it at retail. If I were to lose it no way in hell would I spend 30-40k to replace it. iI own other 30k watches and the daytona is not i n the same class.

I wouldn’t pay the $35k for the current 500 series models. I personally prefer the SS bezel over the ceramic models too. If my name was called for a new ceramic then that’s a different story but until then SS bezel is my preference.

It's not a 'premium'. It's just 'the price'.

Would you pay the premium for a Ceramic Ss Daytona?

Although I have to admit it is shocking lately.

Wow. So cool to see decent retailers handing them out to real customers.

I got mine at 35k and traded in a BB 41 red and a BNIB z-blue Milgauss that I did not use nor wanted to plus a ton of cash.

Currently the Daytona is the watch that I enjoy the most and wear on the weekends or special occasions without blame.

Back then, I bought and enjoyed watches for what they were (2012 and a SS Daytona) and did not think about them as investments. If the market is screwed now, I don’t care about it, nor I will wait 3 years and 100k+ worth of purchases with an AD to enjoy wearing it.

Sure I’ll pay the premium, 30k+ for a 13k SS watch. I was also born yesterday, so there is that…

You can always sell the one you got at premium when you get the one from the AD

There is also a chance that when your AD calls you for one, that premium won’t be there anymore…. that is usually how it happens.

Usually with the Daytona? I doubt it’ll happen with the Daytona. The prices have steadily risen and gone thru even COVID times. Maybe with other watches but we’re talking about the Daytona here.

For me personally - NO - I already consider Rolex itself (at MSRP) to be a 'premium'...and can't stomach paying a double/triple premium on top of an already premium product, but that's just me. Each of us is are in different places as to what/when/how we want things, and the relative "value" we prescribe to those things.

Pay the insane Gray Market prices?
Not ever going to happen, not me.
They can choke on 'em.
They are just mass produced watches, nothing special. Not to mention watches in general are a bit overpriced at MSRP anyway.

If one wants to go gray, that is obviously OK for them.

Id never pay above retail as its just a watch. Many fantastic chronos from independents at that pricepoint.

If the Daytona is a " must have" for your collection then pay the current market price. You might also consider PM, TT and older references if they would fit into your collection.

Is a ceramic Daytona worth 32k USD? We are talking about a watch that has tripled in the last 3 years while previously only slowly appreciating over time. I might be wrong but I am not a buyer at these levels.

I really wanted the watch and paid £14,500 for it in 2019 for it. I didn't regret it after I made the purchase, but before I was thinking what a fool I was. :)

I do not mean this to sound "elitist" in any way ... but as a few have mentioned above, it really is based on your own personal (financial) situation.

Time = Money

What is the current value of your time? For some, their time is worth a lot more money than others (opportunity cost). For example, it is not worth the time it takes Bill Gates to bend over and pick up a $100 bill lying on the street.

You mentioned the Daytona is a "must have" for you in your collection. If the current market price does not affect you in a negative way ... get it and love it.

I would not recommend stretching to current market prices if that amount of money would have a negative affect on your/your family's financial situation.

If, for example, you just made an extra $Million in crypto this year or you received a big bonus at work ... pay the current market price, be grateful that you could, and enjoy the heck out of your new watch.

As long as some (probably a very overwhelming majority) are selling at MSRP, then double or triple that is not "the price".
If ADs were free to mark up prices on new watches two things would I like happen:
1) Grey dealers would have to rethink their business model.

2) The forum would be filled with people chasing watches all over the world based on tips that an AD gouges less than the others. I saw it happen in the motorcycle world 15 or 20 years ago.

I wouldn't pay current market price for a daytona. I would be thrilled to get the call, but if not, I'll just be happy with what I have.

While I agree that the Daytona doesn’t have the build quality of a typical $40k watch, I think the $40k price for a Daytona makes more sense than $16k for a Submariner.
