I wish I still had this cartoon that I saw in the WSJ many years ago. It had these two angels, up in the clouds, and one of them has a briefcase full of money. The other one says "OK, you did take it with you. Now what are you going to do with it?"

Congrats on the BLNR! My year-end bonus would only pay for that $500 watch.

Thanks for that.

Oh, sorry to digress; for me, answering the OP's query: Zero. I don't pay over MSRP for anything, watch, car, house, whatever.

Paid slight over 2x retail for my 116500 black dial.

Figured I preferred having it than two 12 series submariners (ND and LV) which was what I had previously. Looking at current prices, no regrets I went for that trade, not that I am looking to sell but I would likely get back what I paid for it and some spare cash on the side at current prices.

Enjoying it everyday and I am not looking to have a big collection, saves me the hassle of buying other watches to get into an AD’s good books for the possibility of ever getting one.

Additional context : Where I live, there are only a few ADs and there are plenty of big spenders. Spending the same premium will likely only net me a standard submariner at an AD.

I tend to go for older out of production refs to begin with, but I have yet to pay over MSRP for anything contemporary - my late 00s YM I actually got a discount on.

And the turquoise OP craze now? I can't even read the ads for'em anywhere; they make me actively angry - it's an OP fer Chrissakes! :/

Lol. I agree. OP is supposed to be the basic 5k Rolex.

I think this is a very true statement along with how much cash the AD wants to extract from you with other purchases you might not want to make otherwise.

I have the cash and I don’t plan on selling the Batman, so why not get exactly what I want. This will be my first watch over $500.
Totally understandable to logical. Early congrats on the first Rolex - you earned it!

If you count the chocolates I brought my SA for Christmas then I guess that’s technically a minor amount over MSRP, but that’s about the limit of it. I was fortunate enough to always get what I wanted.

I paid 10% above list for my TT Daytona. I was quoted a 1 year wait by my AD but I didn't want to wait 1 year.

To me the $1600 premium was worth it as I got to enjoy it 2 days later on my wrist.

Awkwardly they're now trading around 22-24k ..

This answered a question I inartfully tried to ask on another post.
ie paying up for discontinued is different than paying up at a grey for a current production model
thank you

The most you've paid over MSRP...and how did you justify it?

Haven’t and don’t plan to do so

-$400. I bought my Bluesy 3 years ago when the MSRP was $13,400. I paid $13,000. I don’t I’d ever pay over MSRP for anything.

Your AD calls, offers you a 116500, but he is asking $15,000. You don't buy?

Only paid over MSRP once, for my SD43 the year it was released. $1,500 over (or ~$800 over if you factor in sales tax) which seems like a bargain now. No regrets. That was the watch I wanted and I got nowhere with my AD or the several others I checked. Still have the watch today. The funny thing is my AD called me nearly a year and a half later to tell me they got an SD43 in for me. I laughed a little and politely declined. :)

Hmm I once paid 42k to buy a NIB 5711 white after regretting the sale of mine for a mere 20k a couple years prior. I couldn’t enjoy the watch and never ended up wearing it. Sold it to someone else here for 42k and moved on.

I guess if you consider my 16520 the premium is even more egregious.

The most you've paid over MSRP...and how did you justify it?

I have no issues with someone valuing their time and not wanting to play the current game and thus paying market price for a watch they want and can afford.

Having said that, I’m a lover of horology and that goes much beyond Rolex or any specific hot piece of the moment; my issue, in light of this, is that I’m always considering what other pieces that amount of money can purchase. It becomes a matter of intrinsic value, or lack thereof.

If a Daytona is all you want and aspire to, it becomes simple, of course, but I can’t help but look at the market and consider the other (fantastic) high horology pieces that could be bought with those 43k. This makes it really difficult for me to personally justify this kind of purchase, although it has nothing to do with any moral issues regarding the grey market.

About $2,000 on a Sub a year ago. I was/am fine with it and I enjoy the watch every single day (I probably would not have a Sub today, otherwise). I bought the watch because I like it and I intend to keep it. It's no different to me than it is with houses...if I find something I really like and want, I'm fine paying a bit more to get exactly what I am seeking. I don't buy that many watches nor do I buy that many houses.

I like the Turquoise OP, and would love to have one, but it's not something I'd personally pay over MSRP for.

The amounts that ADs and secondary dealers are charging right now (in slightly different ways) is pretty nuts. If the situation relaxes a bit, I could potentially want to buy something in the future. But if not, I'm content with the watch I have.

Paying over a 'suggested' price for something isn't that unusual of a thing when demand drastically outpaces supply...

The only Rolex I paid over MSRP was for a 16710 Pepsi. I think that I paid about $5k for it, and it cost the original owner about $4k in 2005, so a 25% premium over original MSRP. It's also been the only Rolex/Tudor I've purchased to date on the grey market. Been patiently waiting for the past several years for two pieces and am getting a bit of supply-chain fatigue watching the ubiquitous lack of inventory and grey market prices skyrocketing. Getting closer to just pulling the trigger and paying grey market premiums. The internal debate continues whether to start moving up to other brands.

Never done it. If I cant get the watch, I don't get the watch. I don't like/care enough about anything to justify overpaying for it.
