With all crime up 38% in NYC, I'd say odds against you, not "very small".

Yesterday morning I was sitting in a well known coffee shop chain. A bloke was grabbing his coffee while wearing an Aquanut on black rubber strap. North London. The watch looked amazing.

The fact of the matter is that crime rates have gone up nationally but NYC is still below other metro areas. You might think it’s a s**thole but it’s also one of the most expensive places to live in the world for a reason. Because a lot more people want to live there than those that don’t.
Exactly this.

Are all the articles I've read about Rolex thievery exaggerated? It can't be... the internet says it's not safe to wear your watches. Clearly it must be an anomaly that nothing happened to me and my watch over the weekend.

Perhaps I'm losing my mind

I live in NYC and use my watches as they were intended, to be worn. Not to be left in a safe. Theft is happening all around, doesn't mean you should stop wearing watches.

This strikes me as an ignorant and insensitive post. Nothing wrong with wearing and enjoying your watch, and obviously it isn’t a 100% guarantee that you will be mugged the second you leave home wearing your expensive timepiece; the chances are relatively slim. But thefts do happen, the risk is not pure fantasy, and you are not immune. Crime has been on the rise in major cities, and people have lost their lives. Don’t be obtuse

Is is worse and the average person is now suddenly a watch expert, so that makes things riskier than ever. With that said, I still wear Rolex in major cities. However I avoid wearing yellow gold Rolexes in sketchy areas.

I agree. I live in a major city, and I wear my Rolex daily. It’s just the OP’s attitude that I take issue with.

I like the flippant attitude. These threads are overblown, are typically full of dog whistles and overestimate the chances someone will be robbed by orders of magnitude. They need to be made fun of.

Dude I was wearing my Sub no date walking Times Square with family. As night approached the suitcases with the fake Rollies come out. My cousin wanted to stop and look at them. He had 2 or three different ones in his hand when he decided he didnt like them and gave them back to the vendor. The vendor then looked at me and said “that one on your wrist is mine also”

After a minute to see how I was going to peacefully navigate out of the situation, he recounted what he had and said he was good. But for a minute at least things were um……uneasy.

Got to love NY.

Attitude? My sarcasm towards the plethora of threads showing up on this and other forums asking if it’s safe to wear a Rolex in XYZ city?

If you missed that, (which should have been very obvious, but clearly it’s not as posters are divided), well what can I say? Can’t please everyone!

Overblown to the point people fear to wear their watch. Crime will happen regardless. Social media has really overblown the situation and taken it to a new level.

Wearing these darn things is the best part of the hobby for me. The only one I do not wear is my Father’s Celini as he is deceased and there is no replacing that if it is lost, stolen or whatever. For the rest, it is a matter of situational awareness. I drive my car everywhere which is far more expensive then any watch I have. I don’t think anyone whips out a wad of cash out of there wallet in any setting. Being smart applies to more then the watches. If Im afraid to wear my Rollies there, I probably shouldnt be there in the first place!

I work in NYC. I don’t take the subways now though. I usually wear a 18k Rolex of various varieties so it’s now a no go. I definitely feel crime is up in NYC compared to a few years ago so I am much more careful. I have a car service drive me into work so I don’t take public transit.

i don’t think anyone is saying you shouldn’t wear your watches. i think people are saying you need to be aware of where you are. NYC today is not the same NYC as 3 years ago and i can assure you that people get mugged for their watches more often than we hear about on TRF. my AD has quite a few clients that this has happened to in the past year. we were actually just talking about it yesterday. there are also some watch enthusiasts that i communicate with frequently that are also NYPD detectives and it is in fact a problem. social media and the “market” has made everyone hyper aware of expensive timepieces.

anyways, you do what makes you happy. i guess the people who are cautious are delusional.

ps- if someone chooses to not wear their watch in certain parts of the city it is their decision and doesn’t mean it’s stuck in a safe.

It doesn't mean anything. The expression is "be aware of your surroundings". If you don't know why you should observe and be aware of what is going on around you please don't drive, walk on a sidewalk or grocery shop...in fact just stay home.

Keep tempting it if you want. There was just a pregnant woman stabbed with a screwdriver bc she didn’t let a car merge into her lane quickly enough. That’s as low as it can get. Those type of things seem to be happening more frequently. If mental illness and financial desperation, I can only imagine what someone would do for $25k in the tidy package of a watch. Different times today with the only comparable perhaps the massive NYC crime waves of the 80’s.

This thread is a remarkable display of not understanding relative risk

While it is true something can happen anywhere, that does not make it equally likely to happen anywhere

While it is true you can get mugged wearing a Casio, that does not mean wearing a shiny Rolex does not increase your chances of being targeted

While it is true your chances of getting mugged in certain parts of NYC are low relative to some other cities, or compared to 30 years ago, that does not mean they are not higher than in recent times
