Have 18.5cm or (7.3" wrists) and purchased the DD40 last year for my 40th. I enjoy wearing it but it does feel more like a sports watch to me. My most worn Rolex is a birth year 16030. Haven't stopped thinking about how the DD36 wore on my wrist and how the bracelet was a bit more visible. Will be adding a DD36 this year to commemorate the birth of our first child. I know am not really any help but I guess what I am saying is that I think it depends on the style or look you are going for. My DD40 is mostly worn with Polos or T-shirts, more casual look.

The 36mm looks better, but you can definitely get away with the40mm. As always, personal preference should guide you...
