I love the colours in this Picasso! Were all of these paintings you posted at the MOMA? I think that is where I will go, and save the Met. for another visit.
Yes. All from there. There were maybe 10 Picasso's. Do you like Frida Kahlo? There were quite a few of her self portraits there and that is what she is famous for. Sadly I did not get any pictures of them.

I'm not familiar with Frida....besides the French Impressionists, I've always had a thing for The Group of Seven- Canadian artists---Tom Thompson especially!

There are two galleries, within a couple hours from my place, that hold most of his original works.....a day's worth of "eye candy", so worth the drive!

Michelle, Frida Kahlo was a Mexican Communists. She led a very painful life, polio, bus accident, troubled marriages, miscarriages, and so on. She house Leon Trotsky when he was kicked out of the USSR and had an affair with him. She is know for self portraits. You can read more about her if you wish. I'm kicking myself for not taking some pics but we became rushed. For awhile I used her in my avatar.

Hey Art, I just read a little biography info. on Frida Kahlo- what a gorgeous woman she was; It looks like she was considered a surrealist- some stunning, thought provoking work!
it looks as if she was able to transcend the pain in her life, and be truly recognized as an amazing artist; I wish the same could be said for poor Vincent..I'm thinking that the first image that comes to mind when a person hears of Van Gogh is- the guy who cut off his ear...
Myself, the first thing I think of is that Don Mclean song- -i guess thats a compromise between his talent and his issues...I'm looking forward to going to that MOMA now!!

I also do leather work and this week I am going to learn how to do the Peyote Stitch from my Native American friend, Delores. Michelle, thank you for your kind words and thoughts.....I have always been a person who thinks outside the box and never wanted to conform and color with in the lines. As it stifles your creativity when you are forced to conform and be like everyone else. Which of course happens when you enter Public Schooling under the guise of education and learning. And of course when program cuts occur the first places they axe is Music and Art.....

You guys should see some of the Landscape Designs I have done in the past. I learned drafting from my father and he was quite good but always gave me space to create(he had patents on changes to wing design and rudders on small aircraft). When I print out a Plant and Material List for a design done by hand it takes me 8-10 hours just to do the list. And when I was introduced to the new field of computer Landscape Design programs back in 1996 and 1997, I ended up teaching the guys who created their programs in how to use them and showed them what their programs were capable in doing.......

I also have the knack of memorizing the Latin names of plants and their cultural requirements at a pretty fast pace.....somewhere in the neighborhood 125 to 150 per week. I find it fun and fascinating..........never stop learning or lose the passion you have for the thirst for knowledge!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

One of the reasons mine never set foot in a public school and boy could they see the difference now that they are in college. They had excellent art/history classes.

But that is another story for another day.

With all due respect Art, why start describing Frida Kahlo as a Mexican communist? I was born in Mexico and all I can tell you is that that is not what we like to hear about an artist like herself.

What about referring to her the right way. Frida Kahlo was one of the most amazing female painters that has ever existed and the wife of the greatest and most renowned Mexican painter Diego Rivera.

Come on, you are better than that!

I agree and hope Vincent is resting in peace. You know he only sold one painting while alive and now has 7 of the most expensive paintings ever sold. Hopefully somehow he knows how important his work is.

That Starry Night video is excellent.

Don't know if it's true or not. But I heard that that blue/purple color he so often uses was a creation of his by mixing different colors.

Hi Mr. Submarino, with sincere due respect...i myself did not interpret that statement in a derogatory light; Communism is a socio-politico-philosohophy, not a contagious skin disease....My first thoughts, when reading Frida described as a Mexican communist was that, as a female- in her society at that time(early 1920s), she was a strong courageous woman who was able to publicly articulate her viewpoints-unlike most of the women in her country at that time in history; Anyway, when I googled information on her I found the stress was on her art and that she was recognized as one of the most amazing surreal artists at that time- a huge accomplishment - being a female in a male dominated field.
She was also drop-dead gorgeous! I can really see Salma Hayek playing Frida in the movie!!

One of our local universities offers a Landscape Architecture undergrad and graduate degree program- its very intense and hard to get into the program!
Leo, you could probably teach in an environment like that!

I'd never seen or heard of such a thing before you showed it here. Seems like a cool idea.
Around here the braided rugs are popular, or used to be. I like them. Reminds me of when I was a kid. I like the country-ish look. Not country western - this is New England. We don't give a hoot about cowboys or Indians here. More like old country, Quaker, Shaker, Amish kind of stuff.
My house is country.

Well coffeeshop, I have another "proud mama" moment to share...
I took Kate to (yet another) horse show today- out the door at 4am...
Her coaches invited her to attend an elite jumper show - one that they compete in- ( before delusions of grandeur set in I realized that they really needed a 3rd horse on the trailer to help split the transportation cost )Anyway, in her division, there were at least five men in the group competing- on some pretty schmancy horses- a couple of whom were German imports) (i've never seen full grown men competing on our usual circuit!) Well my amazing speed-demon team- Kate and Taylor, blew them all out of the park! picking up a 1st, 2nd and Grand Champion This winning steak is not typical of them- they are not super consistent (yet), but when they are "on"- they are brilliant

I see a kitty in one of your pics.... does she scratch your leather furniture?
I'm dead set on getting a leather sectional and I'm praying my cats don't take an interest in it.....they scratch my wicker/rattan chairs- i hope thats enough of a diversion....

No, the cats don't bother the leather but they do appreciate it when we leave a blanket out for them to lie on. I guess even critters don't like the cold leather. Next couch will be cloth.

I'm going from a fabric couch to leather, because i'm anticipating leather to be easier to clean...(fingers crossed) The sofa set we have now will be going downstairs to Austin's man-cave....where i hope he will spend the rest of his messy adolescence!!!! Iv'e got numerous enticing things down there for him- wide screen TV, X-Box...now all he needs is something to sprawl on....I can then reclaim my family room as a happy comfortable "after-a-long-day" retreat

PS - Michelle - we have a leather couch and I don't ever plan on going back to fabric again because leather IS so easy to clean and care for. This one is about 17 years old and was in good shape until our rabbit decided to chew a big hole in it last year. Stupid rabbit. When we had a cat, she avoided the couch. I don't think she liked the slidy surface, or perhaps the smell of the leather.

That's just great Michelle! Congatulations to your daughter!

I've had quite the proud father moment today as well! I drove back to Trois-Rivières (at night...in the rain...) and upon getting in my kitchen I realized my Ficus hadn't lost a single leaf over the weekend (not that he has many left but still...)! I think we're getting better!

I felt quite a relief, we'll see if this keeps on going during the week and, if I'm lucky enough, we may even see some new ones growing on it (the other one keeps groing like crazy, I don't see why the Ficus wouldn't do the same).

...Oh, and when I entered my living room/bedroom this gorgeous young lady was waiting for me...

I had to broom her out again because she was near the corner where I just put my amplifier and my Les Paul (yes, I did decide to bring a guitar over here but I have big headphones to make sure nobody hears me around...).

I hope everybody is well, is the coffee/tea still good around your places?
