It's funny - I was nutty about the book but never saw the movie. I still have the paperback from 1974 (look at that 75 cents price!), complete with my 11-year-old's doodling, when I read the book. Phoebe was thrilled to have it and brought it to school during the study of that book. I also gave her my 1970s Levi's jeans jacket (I guess like the one Johnny wore), still in pretty good shape after all these years. She wears it every day to school.

Good morning coffeeshop.
Lisa- the Robert Frost poem could be set to music....I can hear a soulful, sorrow filled tune when I read it; just beautiful!
Your 1974 "doodles" show a blossoming artistic hand! It is also a magical thing when your child truly wants to pick up an interest/passion that you had at her age...

Morning Michelle, Art,

That movie is visual candy. It should have won an award for art direction; I don't know if it did. But every morsel of it is stunning.

Re the acting, kind of a letdown, gotta say. Poor Colin almost turned to the audience and declared, "Where's a decent Jane Austen script?"

Since you like Colin, I should say how much I liked The King's Speech. Did you see it?

--
Vermeer is such a fascinating painter. Talk about obsessive/meticulous in the old school way. So few paintings, and the small scale of them is rather shocking in person.

I love it too- That and the Mona Lisa of course- both portraits show really intriguing expressions !
I've been in the non-rolex threads,(thats where i noticed your new Avatar), and you posted a pic of your wife's Cartier; does she love it? Any thoughts on Cartier? I'm thinking about one for myself- many of them look huge on the wrist, but if they have an in house movement, I'm interested

"Top'o'the mornin" to you J!
I LOVE Colin Firth in anything he's ever done- especially in Pride and Prejudice- the BBC miniseries with Jennifer Ehle!! Also, What a Girl Wants, with Amanda Bynes!
I still need to see The King's Speech in it's entirety- only watched a bit of it on a plane once

I have spent a good deal of time looking at my print of this painting trying to figure out this young girls expression. Surprised, scared and about to run, looking back to say farewell forever, happy. Can't figure it out.

Michelle, my wife loves this watch. I don't. But she wanted it. It is a Santos 100. The Santos line is a very well liked line of watches in the Cartier line up. Cartier movements are not in house but are Valjoux movement de done by Cartier. Cartier has their own watch shops in Switzerland. They are very good watches. Lady Cartier watches hold their value well. Cartier service is top notch, some say the best. We visited the one in NYC, you must visit there. It is close to Tiffany and the good watch AD's. We have a Cartier boutique in Orlando. They give first class service there.

My wife has a Rolex with diamond dial and TT. She likes it but does not like the attention that she has been given over the years. Every once in a while she will wear a Breitling chrono. I wanted her to get a mid size SS Rolex, like the DJ with the pink dial, or an Exp1, that sort of thing. But this is what she wanted. I forget the cost but it was around $5600. Cartier does not like to discount. Oh, it is an automatic, no quartz for us.

She is saying, "I am a blank canvas onto which you will project your fantasies of beauty and desire. I am wearing a precious thing that is not of my class, which indicates that the artist has highly manipulated this image."

That's interesting. You know, I never gave much thought to the pearl, in fact never, just her facial expression and trying to figure it out. You gave me more to think about when looking at this. That is how does wearing the pearl make her feel. I guess I always figured the pearl was a normal thing for her to wear.

Very interesting connection there, Bill. I would say it's within possibility. Good artists (of all persuasions) routinely quote other artists, as we know.

--
One thing to keep in mind for Vermeer, as for any artist working in their own contemporary style, is what their contemporary viewers would have made of the work. She would have been seen as a beautiful woman, and clearly not a woman of status, yet that big fat pearl was a notable luxury good then.

I ordered an Otterbox case from amazon and am waiting for it to come in next week.
I'm not quite certain how you have your Contact list set up originally but in settings you can change the listings to Last Name first or a Person's First name first.....how many Gigs is your Data plan as 2 Gigs should suffice for a Month's usage...and of course if you are in a WiFi environment by all means use it. As for the Otterbox, I have their Defender case for my iPhone4s as well as for my iPad2 and I really like their products. Good solid products.....

Hey Art- a delayed thankyou for this info !I'm just exploring what non-rolex options are out there. I would agree with your wife about not wanting to much attention drawn to my wrist....I do like the look of the Santos; Are they considered a "hardy" watch? (one you don't have to worry about knocking once in a while?)

Well, the case is very thick and heavy also rounded to fit the wrist. Seems as thick as a Sub. Cartier call the case "massive". She wears it to the gym and all around use and is hard on watches. It has held up well. She wishes it had a date function. This white model has been discontinued. I think they have a pinkish one and some others. You can see them on the Cartier wed site. Also prestigetime is a good place to see them. The mens size is huge.

What about a reverso Michelle. Total class watch. The classique version(the one I'd want) which is nearest to the original is now classed as a ladies watch. (they do a smaller ladies one aswell) Which is like Rolex classing the 36mm DJ as purely ladies.

Anyway I think the classique is the best version without any complications. Because of this the price isn't as bad as you'd think. And you'll love the manual wind.

Or if you like cartier, think I prefer the tank francaise over the santos. You get a nice bracelet, lower profile and comes in lots of different sizes, and a date if you want.

Really good book and film, I think Scarlett Johansson at her best along with Lost in Translation

The book certainly explains a lot about the painting, who the girl is. Although it is not actually known for sure who the girl was. So the book is more interpretation than fact.

Thanks Wes- I actually had been reading a bit about JLC- on a thread about wether JLC should be considered an haute horologie "thing"...(the TRF consensus was YES)
The Reverso is cool- two looks in one watch, and the movement is an in house one I believe
So I'm going to pour myself a glass of wine and start researching this watch now...been a long day helping out at a horse show, and then watching a thrilling, tense hockey game- so time to kick my feet up!

The classique just has a normal back(can be engraved) there are quite a few versions that have dual face, or clear case back. Yep in-house movement

Designed in 1931, for polo players(horse connection) to turn it over to protect the glass.

Funny you should say that, Leo. We were at a shop yesterday that carried a lot of high-end denim (sounds like an oxymoron - to me, anyway.) I was asking the sales guy if they carried the original raw denim 501 Shrink-to-fits like we used to buy in the 1970s and '80s. I thought they were no big deal... turns out they are around $200 these days, and this shop didn't even carry them. You can get them from the Levi's web site, which touts them as Made in the USA. Of course, back when I'd buy them they were all made in the USA. I used to go to our local department store and get them for about $16.00. I still have two pairs of them - well faded and covered with paint splatters!

Anyway, I was talking to the sales guy and mentioned that my 12 year old daughter now wears my old Levis jeans jacket, and that she was wearing it right now somewhere in the shop. His eyes got really wide and he asked if I could go find her. June rounded her up, and the guy put his hands to his cheeks and said, "Would you mind letting me see it?" Phoebe took it off and handed it over. He handled it almost reverently... asked if he could take pictures of it. I swear his voice was almost trembling. It was so... interesting. I was glad I held on to it all these years. It hasn't been worn that much and is still a nice deep blue.
