Yes.....fresh pizza with Garlic and Tomato slices is absolutely wonderful and sure clears the sinuses!!!

My plans were to go out to the Gardens this afternoon but it is raining now so we will see about later...mid-afternoon and there is always tomorrow if the rain continues.....

Wes, I'm in total agreement...this Forum is a great place to come to and visit.....and where else can you make friends with and talk to people from all over this world? Of course it would be really fun to be able for us all to get together some day and 'break bread together'.....

Take it easy.....Leo

There is a "Frankenstorm" hitting the east coast very soon, and in our area,(central Ontario) we will be clipped by it- rain and wind, maybe snow, for most of Monday- Wednsday...
Bill- you better cover your Valkyrie .....

As for getting together someday....that could happen!

Wow. I just looked on my globe. You are really up there. Are many people bi-lingual there? So many around here are in Spanish and English. We have quite a few Haitians who speak French. Have you been to Hudson Bay?

No worries. She's tucked in safe and sound in my shed (no garage ) and covered to keep her warm.
Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Okay guys, to make a long story short our school went to the South Shore of Montreal last Thursday to visit a rather famous Quebec's conductor who is a producer as well. The man has played music and produced a few albums and he also happens to have a passion for horology. Now I must admit I thought I'd just go to see a man who liked watches but never did I think I would see what I saw at his place, he had, hands down, the most impressive "watchmaker's workshop" I've ever seen! He had very old tools from the 1800's as well as most recent ones, various machines to create and work on watch parts, wristwatch and pocket watch movements (some of them being more than 100 years old), let's just say he was much more than fully equipped and we were all drooling everywhere admiring what he had (I've probably spent an hour or so in this rather small place and I'm sure I missed a whole lot of things).

...He then made us sit around a large table and handed us a few watches...boy...

I kid you not, he had pocket watches with tourbillon escapments (some of them were completely hand made and assembled, part by part), fusée-chaîne transmissions, complete calenders and even some minute repeaters (he even made one play for us)! In all honesty and without wanting to exaggerate I never thought I'd see such complications elsewhere from the forums, watch brands' websites and Youtube, let alone touching them and admiring their movements with a loupe!

He had some watches that, as I've said, were more than 100 years old in that very lot of pocket watches with those fancy complications. He told us that one of the watches he handed to us was his because he begged the previous seller to sell it to him for almost 15 years and another one had been made by another horology enthusiast: if memory serves, the man spent almost a year working with only a very few tools and he made a properly working tourbillon...I couldn't believe it!

...And then, as if it wasn't enough, he invited us to his studio...boy boy boy...

He had about 30 guitars and string instruments, pianos, keyboards, drums and percussions...a whole lot of instruments to say the least! I thougt I had died and was in heaven (as if the watches didn't give me that effect earlier that day...)! He also lead us to his mastering room which took almost two years to build and for which he hired a team of sound engineers, everything from the position to the angle of the speakers and walls has been carefully calculated. He made us listen to some Pink Floyd and the sound was absolutely perfect and amazing, you could swear you were living on the Dark Side Of The Moon!

There it is guys, that's how my last Thursday went...

P.S.: No pictures of the ring tonight, please accept my apologies for that but rest assured, I shall post them this week!

Sounds amazing Carl. Think I would of been in heaven too. I would love to just have a play with a minute repeater let alone own one. I'm a bit of an audiophile too, would of love listening to to the music as well.

You need to get one of them spy cams in a buttonhole so can take some piccys for us.

Yesterday I invited a neighbor lady who is an artist and friend to go to the Chicago Botanic Gardens(CBG). She was like a young child(She's 65 yrs.) who was just amazed and mesmerized at the unfolding garden landscapes and anticipating what she could/would find around each new corner as we walked. She mentioned that the next time we went back up their she was going to bring a proper 35mm camera to take pictures with instead of just an iPhone. It was very cold and windy and in the late afternoon so we only walked around for approximately two hours and we barely covered very much real estate. We ended up in the greenhouses to warm up and then we headed back to the car to find a place for dinner. Sunday was the last day for their Halloween Promotion Party event for young families and there were strollers everywhere and children and parents a like all dressed up in costumes running around!!!

The minute repeater is really a wonderful complication, I know a few brands make watches with them but, alas, it seems like it's much rarer to find one on an affordable timepiece than a tourbillon...

As for the spy camera, I could have taken pictures but only had my cellphone...not very convenient if you ask me given its notorious poor camera!

You shoulda grabbed one of those axes and rocked the house - Carl style. Maybe he would have joined in. The others could just keep the beat.

Alas, no left handed guitars in there Bill...can you believe it!? The man has about 30+ axes and not a single one has Carl's seal of approval!

I did this with one of my guitars but you must think about the strings Leo, it's not as easy as it seems to flip a guitar!

I do understand... you do have to switch the strings and the sound will not be correct but you can chalk it up to a new style of sound.....who knows you could become as famous as Jimi Hendricks!!!

Oh well I don't really mind about the sound as I did it with a few guitars over the years and never noticed a real difference, as long as the strings are on the good side I'll do just fine!

Leo and gang, I have a fun question for you... for Phoebe's science fair project she's comparing how cut mums and potted mums do when watered with food-colored water. You know how cut flowers will draw up colored water through their stems, tinting the petals...? Florists use this trick often with white orchids, carnations, tulips and roses to get a desired color. But Phoebe wanted to see what would happen if you simply watered a potted white flower with colored water. Will it change the color of the flowers? So we got four pots of mums and are watering each with plain, green, red or blue water. We just started the experiment yesterday and will monitor daily any changes in the plants. We did the same with four cut stems in glasses of colored water, and they've already begun to take on color.

What do you think will happen? Will the potted mums change color from being watered with colored water? (20 drops of food coloring per every 1 cup of water)

I'm waiting to hear what Leo thinks... Very cool experiment though! I'm wondering what would happen if a flower seed was planted in soil that has been saturated with a colour?.

I believe they've been to his studio once and I believe the man follows the news regarding our school on Facebook (not that I'm supposed to know that...I don't have an account! ). He told us it was his pleasure to greet us as he never has the chance to talk about watches with people and he is thrilled to see young men and women studying them.

P.S.: It was an outstanding day indeed!

Hey Art, Are things pretty stormy in your neck of the woods? Or maybe the south east is getting a little break from hurricanes? We are in Ontario's Mennonite country so lots of horse and buggys etc and Pennsylvania Dutch is heard a lot; Many of our schools offer French immersion , but the french thats is taught is France-french....not Quebecois My sister-in-law's kids have gone through french immersion programs for up to 7 years, and when visiting relatives in Quebec this summer, had a hard time communicating with them!
About Hudson Bay- it looks closer to us on a map then then it really is. The furthest north I've been was in Timmons Ontario, (Shania Twain's hometown!)The highway does not go any further north then that; it starts swinging west toward Manitoba.
One of my best friend's husband rode his motorcycle to James Bay (the southern tip of Hudson Bay)- He rode the Trans Canada as far as Cochrane Ontario- then he and his bike took a train to Moosonee Ontario,(the only way to get there!) from that town, there is a rut filled gravel path , about 20 miles long, that he rode on to reach the shore of James Bay.He is crazy!

Very interesting. I would have thought more French speaking folks.

We had 40mph wind and rain Sat and Sun. It is all gone for us. Wasn't bad like some we've had. Looks bad for our friends in the NE.

My wife can speak perfect Spanish and English, she probably speaks more Spanish during the day than English. I can hold my own but don't like to speak it so much. My Son knows it ok but would never speak it. He met our own Rafael, (Figbo), don't know if he spoke it with him or not. My daughter does very well, in fact it was her first language until 3 years old. Funny, she is blue eyed and blonde headed and has a complete Irish name first and last.
