Really like the look of that Ball watch Lisa, very femine, I love the shape of the case.

The lume bars looks like mini uranium bars. (You shoud of worked in a nuclear power station, lots of lume there)

Are you not worried that if you fall out of favour with the watch and sell, you could lose a lot, especailly as you are buying new? (Just trying to be the voice of reason)

Nah, not too worried. It's nowhere near as pricey as Rolex.

The lume bars are tiny tritium-filled tubes. They have a half-life of more than 12 years. And I understand that at service time, new tubes can be placed if needed.

I'm glad you like the watch, Wes.

1st timer questions

Hello,

I thought the "girls coffeeshop talk" seemed the least intimidating place to post a message.

I have a Rolex watch that was gifted to me. No box, no clue what the price, I think I should get it appraised for insurance purposes and if it's worth a lot might even it sell it eventually.

Do I go to anyone to have it officially appraised or does it need to be at a jeweler that sells the brand? I have no clue. I live in Chicago, IL, USA.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, ABS, and welcome to the forum!

I'd take the watch to a jeweler that sells Rolex (Authorized Dealer, or AD). I don't know who the Chicago ADs are but am sure someone here does, or you could look it up online. It doesn't cost much to get the watch authenticated/appraised, though the appraisal value will usually be higher than what the watch would sell for.

What kind of Rolex is it? Do have any photos you could post?

You need to go to a Rolex AD.

Hi ABS...and Welcome,
I live in the south suburbs and use James & Sons Fine Jewelry store as my AD(Authorized Dealer)for all things jewelry and Rolex watches. They have a store in Lincoln Park so I will get you their phone number and street address. They are a great company to do business with and I go to their store in Orland Park, Il. Tourneau has a Rolex Boutique on North Michigan Ave.(Magnificent Mile) but I have heard of some people who have not been happy with this company but it is an option for you. You can also Google jewelry stores who sell Rolex watches in Chicago for other listings.....

Here you go:

James and Sons
1845 North Clybourn Ave.
Chicago, Il. 60614
1(773) 327-8800

Take it easy.....Leo

Welcome to TRF!

You've got some great advice from my friends above but allow me to warn you that as per Rolex USA's rules your watch will be confiscated if proven fake, therefore I'd recommend you to compare it with pictures of authentic timepieces or to read about the ways to find out if it's a replica or not prior to taking it to an AD. You may also post a thread in the Watch Out!!! section of this forum, it's the place where our experts usually hang out making the difference between real and fake watches.

I hope you'll enjoy the forum!

Hi, Kev. Merry Christmas to you, too. Yep, they're the only dealer in the state. They have a store in Tulsa, too. I think the owner's from the Samuel Gordon's jeweler family.

Santa bringing any new watches for you?

No. My Patek is more than enough. Still house hunting. Trying to save some money for that.

Lisa, I would love to have a new watch from Santa.....maybe it could be a Milgauss and I can really test it to see if it would work for me and keep time without stopping or going drastically out of time.......

You got good advice. Welcome to TRF, and the best thread around, The Girls Coffeeshop - Where everybody knows your name.

EDIT - Apart from Chicfarmer1, we only know her as J. The Girls Coffeeshop - Where everybody knows at least your first initial.

Yes, I really do like the green crystal and I also think it would go great with a white dial as well.......but as long as it would work correctly...I can live with the black dial.......

I had the blk dial for a while and could never get used to it. It wore top heavy for me and is quite blingy. When looking for the time my eyes always went right for the orange hand, for some reason that always bothered me.

Art, very interesting and I can see how the orange seconds hand could be distracting but I do like that hand because it is different and as for being top heavy.....I wear my watch on the underneath side of my wrist so the extra weight will not effect me at all.....but thanx for your observations. I just want a mechanical Rolex watch that works without stopping or going out of whack and keeping poor time.....but of course I do have my cell phone for checking the time if need be!!!

They are tough watches no doubt, and I origenally bought it for the lightning bolt hand. Who knows, I may get another some day. The price is right on them used. Some thing the white dials could be scarce some day. When the model was first release there didn't see to many of them around.
