Don't really have a relationship with an AD. I did email 4 Rolex watchmakers in London. All replied we don't/won't do this. Obviously we know Rolex won't do this. So finding someone to do this will be difficult. Carl, have you got a Rolex parts account yet?

Maybe I'm nit-picking too much, and it's not that bad. Will obviously still give to Mum Christmas day, I won't say anything to her. Maybe discuss it further down the line, see how she is getting on with it.

That sounds like a good plan, Wes. It's not one of those things I would have really noticed unless it was pointed out.

A buddy of mine in London has an AD that does dial swaps and so forth for him. If you want I'll ask him who it is.

Yeah I never noticed till I got it in my hand. Maybe it will be alright, just that once you notice, it can bug you. And I'm not even the one who's gonna wear it.

The hands are shorter and thinner than the previous version 14200. The minute hand doesn't meet the minute markers, and at a glance you can mistake the second hand and minute hand, because the minute hand is so thin.

I can't understand why Rolex felt the need to make them smaller, and the Date(same case 34mm) would have the correct sized hands?

Am I looking at this too much? I'm not the type of person to pour over details like fonts, rehauts etc. But the contrast of the hands to the dial is key for reading the time. I'm not saying I can't read the time, but it is not as legible as my DJ. Mums eyes aren't the greatest.

I know it's only the Air King and there isn't many threads on it round here,
http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=63363

Just that it's a head scratcher.

Some pics, bear in mind, these are close up's with good lighting.

Air king 114200

Date 115200

Older Air King 14200

Well anyway it was good talking watches with you Carl for a change.
I totally agree with you Wes....the hands on the AK are frustrating. That Date model is much easier to read at a glance. Hopefully your mom won't have a problem, but if she does, cold you trade the AK for a Date? Suppose it would have to be unworn though...

Hey, you did a good job, Wes. Who gets the red dino? There must be a pre-teen girl on your list, too - One Direction.

I see your mum's watch.

Nephew Joseph(2) gets Steggy the Stegosaurus. He's got a bit of a dinosaur themed bedroom going on.

Nephew Oliver(4) gets a Hornby Thomas the tank train set. One of my earliest christmas memories was getting a Hornby train set.

My brother has a daughter from a previous relationship, Katie who's 13 I think. Don't get to see her much because she lives a way away. Don't know whether she will be down this christmas, but will get the One Direction DVD.

Thirteen-year-old girl = One Direction fan.

Now, does your mum know she's getting the watch? Or did she try them on with you just thinking it was for fun?

Good idea, Dawna. The kids' school has a wrapping paper fundraiser every fall, and I found that the paper is really nice and heavy. However, I am way short of ribbons and bows this year... so there are a lot of homemade ones that look kind of weird. Oh well... nobody minds.

Will have to remember that for next time, I hate wrapping so much. I have seen people wrap where it is picture perfect. Speed is my goal

I've obviously mentioned it and got her to try on that air king a few months back. I did play it that down a lot though, so who knows.

Did some wrapping last night and hope to finish up today. Didn't use any gift bags but they can make things much easier.

Any man who wraps gifts gets many points.

A few years back, I had given Dave a gift in a gift bag. He opened it, said, "I'll be right back," and left the room with the bag. Then he put his gift to me in the bag and handed it to me with a flourish.

He may of just bought the same gift bag as you to put his gift in. Coincidence

Ha! Awesome! Seriously that's a riot.

I suck at wrapping. I do it every year and never get any better. My son, on the other hand, learned to do it once and now the presents come out perfect every time.
For a few years he was so proud of his skill that I could get him to do all my wrapping for me. All I had to do was hand over a bag of gifts and he was on it. Life was good.
This year he's on to my manipulation and won't participate anymore. I'm back to clumsy looking, over taped packages with bows stuck over the ripped parts.
It was good while it lasted.

As hard as I try I just can't do a good job of it. But with lots of tape, and paper it gets the job done good enough, I guess.

I'm inclined to agree with you Wes.. the hands are much thinner, especially in relation to the markers and numbers. Why Rolex went that route ??.
.
Perhaps you'll find a watchmaker who could make a swap of hands...If you're Mom has a problem with telling time...! I probably wouldn't mention it (the smaller hands) unless Mom does..or doubts it..(the seeing it clearly..).. You know what I mean...!

Thanks guys, yeah strange how I didn't really spot/think about the hands much before buying, it's very annoying. Mums had these tiny watches before, never really asked if she can actually see the time. The main decision was whether 34mm is going to be too big for her or go with 31mm. And now I'm still questioning whether she is gonna be able to read the time. She's 59 years old.

Anyway found a couple good reviews on this Airking(114200), one mentioning that it is really legible, and the other saying they like the thin hands, so go figure. Also some nice history, never knew there was an Air-Lion, Air-Giant and Air-Tiger.

Hey Lisa, do your girls ever watch the snowman. It's very traditional here, and is shown every year. British book and animation from 1982. Has a nice build up, no words, skip to 15.30 to get to the climax with walking in the air song.
