Last night at the party the dads watched the first Vacation movie, Animal House and The Big Lebowski. The wives watched some stupid ball fall. The dads saw boobs on TV. The wives saw a bunch of boobs watching old movies in the other room.

at Bill.

Dave came up from the basement long enough to show Violet and me his new riveting device. He's putting them into some sheet metal for his simulator project. Riveting is cool.

Rivets are the perfect answer. While screws are certainly easier to install and remove, rivets are not only permanent but also flat on BOTH sides. For example you would never want to assemble house gutters (eves troughs) with screws because every fallen leaf or piece of debris would get hung up, trapping more and more crap until they were clogged. Rivets are flat and allow everything to flow right through. It's seldom that anyone would need to disassemble a downspout so no reason not to use rivets. Sure it's more effort to pre drill. That is always a PIA but the benefits are worth it.
All hail the pop rivet.

Now steel rivets are a whole nuther matter. One of the ridiculous things I've had to to do make Ethan's truck work is to replace the rear leaf spring shackles and the mounts. The mounts are riveted to the frame with big heavy steel rivets that are put on hot and flare on the opposite side from the head. I had to cut the off with with a torch by melting the rivet to molten, dripping metal, cleaning the holes (making them round again) and installing bolts through the new brackets and frame.
I guess rivets are cheaper than nuts and bolts but I sure wish Ford wouldn't have cheaped out on that one. What a PIA job that was.

One question:
Will the flight simulator fit through a door or is it in the basement forever?

Way back when my parents knew a guy who built a small airplane in his cellar (wings were seperate of course). No it couldn't fit out the door and had to be destroyed when the house sold.

Lisa - you need to let Dave come up and fly with me. I'll let him fly a plane for real. Of course, I'll be paying close attention...

Has Dave sorted out the actual software yet. I've still got my Sega Master System somewhere. Can lend him it and afterburner. Used to love that game.

Just like the guy your parents knew, the flight sim will be one with the basement. Not entirely certain, but it's pretty close to a full scale 737 cockpit. I suppose it could be disassembled, but I think it's going to occupy the end of the basement club room for many years to come.

That's between you guys. I'm out of the mix on that one! Maybe he'd like to just sit in the pilot's chair and pretend, like he does at home.

I don't know what he's using, Wes. But whatever it is I'm sure it is expensive and he doesn't want me to find out what it cost.

Lisa, actually...I've had some time to think things through.....and with all that you do for your family...it would take way more on hubby's part to ever come close to making up for his shortfalls!!!

So today I start my sea food diet. If I see food I have to eat it.

And then someone goes and brings in a yard of jaffa cakes. I love these things. Diet starts tomorrow.

So the airline has only stumped up half what it costs to replace my bag so far. Don't ask. Hoping they will still pay in full.

Anyway need to get a new bag. What you think is better, Brown or Black?

Brown. More subtle. I'm not big on branding.
