Buy a Rolex. Heck buy two. That's 100% more impressive than one.
$4000 a month for rent in NYC is pretty common especially if you live in Manhattan. I am guessing the avg. price of a one bedroom in NYC is $3500 especially if you live in a doorman building. Two bedrooms in my building go for $5500. Rent is a huge chunk of people's income in NYC.

You can find cheaper rent in the outer boroughs but if you want convenience you pay for it.

We have to bear in mind that this type of thread will appear every few months since the newbies have no memory of the last car crash thread that ended up closed with someone banned.

The guy might not be purchasing a Rolex for the same reason as many of us but it's his choice.

Let's see if this type of thread can just eventually fizz out through lack of interest without a lock/ban.

am i the only one not feeling any wrong intention or obnoxiousness in the op?
i guess some people love misunderstanding and bashing others.

i reckon that this kind of behaviour should be banned not the simple question asked by by the op.

As I've stated somewhere above I think the OP is a fair enough question, even if I would not have asked it myself. To some degree it is where the thread has gone or some of the subsequent posts that are potentially a problem. Luckily though there has been more humor than nastiness. I agree that the thread should fade away.....

i don't refer to the humour but to the pure and utter bashing he gets in some comments. just don't get it.
if i don't like a watch or a question here at trf, and believe it happens quite a lot, i just walk away and do not comment.

Apologies if this is an obnoxious question. I've been debating whether to buy one for a while....

Appreciate some inputs.

Thanks!
If you make 6 figures, let's assume at least 100K year, which is roughly 2k a week. I do not think you should have a problem at all affording a Rolex. That is unless you have tons of bills/student loans/car loans/etc. The only person that knows if you have enough money is you!

The two truths of this thread have been repeated multiple times.

1. Yes, he's ready to buy/own a Rolex.
2. He only needs to try some on in real life. Feel the heft, determine his own style etc.

Everything else has been all in fun. I'm confident that the OP can take a joke and will appreciate the good natured ribbing. Nothing mean spirited here.

That's an unfair comment! $200 for ripped jeans is a rip-off but there are plenty of jeans for $200-$500 that warrant every penny. Being something of a denim-head myself I have an appreciation for selvedge japanese denim using low-production cotton and hand dying and loom processes.

If you can have an appreciation for $5000+ watches and the manufacturing / design that goes into them, I think you need to respect that other people can have an appreciate for other expensive inanimate objects.

Sorry for the rant!

Please note that in my ripped statement there is nothing but a statement of MY lack of appreciation for $200 jeans. No comment whatsoever on any one else's appreciation for them. As above - to each their own! The world would be a very boring place if everyone had exactly the same tastes.

When you have money available and feel like buying something luxurious, do not hesitate. When you (will) have less money, you won't regret still enjoying the good stuff you bought. I don't earn very much currently but I have plenty of good stuff to enjoy that I could not afford buying any more. Carpe diem is the key.

Rent in NYC is typical to be in $4k-$5k range. As far as being 25 yo and making $100k, congrats. I'm sure most of your $$ monthly expenses is on eating out, drinks, and/or clothes? If you cut that down, for say 5-6 months, you should be able to buy a rolex and pay it in full.

When i know i want to buy a high end luxury item, I cut out unnecessary expenditures mentioned above. Its nice to look back on the watches that i did purchase at 37yr old and know that i could sell them for at least what i paid for them if required in the future.

Rule of thumb for your first Rolex is two months salary. Wait, that might be wrong. Seriously, I think you're probably OK to get one now.

Damn...ppl are still looking at my thread! Cool!

Anyways, for better or worse, to the overwelming approval of some and utmost disgust of others, I bought a Explorer 39mm from swissluxury...non of the ADs in NYC had one and I didn't feel like waiting...

It will arrive tomorrow afternoon... I will post pics once I get it...paystub as background too if y'all want!

I paid by wire so no credit card bills...to those responsible folks

Can't wait!! Hopefully it's a real one, Darryl seemed like a stand up guy to deal with

Thanks for all the response!
