Speedmaster > Daytona?

Daytona vs all these new coaxial variations of the Speedmaster? Daytona! But manual wind Speedy pro moon watch vs every other chronograph out there (including the Daytona)? Speedmaster pro! Are we talking movement? Accuracy? There will always be a better one in the future... Quartz can run circles around any mechanical in terms of accuracy. But history is history... And that is what sets the Speedmaster pro apart from the rest.

You can use the Chronograph to keep track of the date if it's really important to you. Just advance it one second for each day of the month.

Owned both and flipped both. Would buy back the moonwatch in a heartbeat.

Wouldnt buy the daytona unless its a platinum.

It seems not a good idea for me because the chronograph function would be replaced by the date function, although I seldom use the chrono.

IMHO, the Omega Speedmaster IS the chrono to have. Just my $.02.

Daytonas are nice, but today they are clingy and on the small side. The original Speedmaster is an iconic watch that's still made in it's original incarnation and with a comfortable 42mm size that is modern as well.

You can't go wrong with either, but Speedy wins for me. Unless its the Platty!

Well said. I'm fortunate to own a Daytona, a Breitling Navitimer and the Omega Speedmaster Professional.

All are wonderful watches. The Daytona is truly beautiful, yet still rugged. The Daytona's subdials are difficult to read, unless it's overcast. Legibility favors the Speedmaster and the Navitimer. Both are very practical chronographs. Easy to read quickly!

For me, history is the clincher. The Navitimer is storied...but the Omega is the Moonwatch.

Also, my Speedmaster belonged to my father. I was ten, standing at his side, when he bought it. It's my most treasured watch for that reason.

I think the Moonwatch, if purchased new today, is a remarkable value, too.

For me, the Grey Side of the Moon is too large. It's size might suit someone else. It's a fine looking watch and if you like it, buy it and wear it with joy. I'm sure, as a matter of the watchmaker's skill, it will hold its own with the best of them.

I prefer daytona over speedmaster simply because it's more iconic. There are too many variations of speedmaster. Also I prefer daytona because the dial looks classier than speedmaster, completely subjective I know. Just my 2c

Omega says that the 9300 has a 100 meter rating, but I don't trust that at all. Not that I would take one diving or anything, but I wouldn't feel comfortable taking a swim with a watch that doesn't have a screw-down crown. That's just me.

I wore a Speedmaster Reduced as a daily watch for years, so I understand the appeal of the classic and readable design that (almost) all versions of the Speedmasters share.

But the Daytona is simply on a different level. I debated on getting a 9300 Speedy, but couldn't get past the size and how high it sat on the wrist or how expensive it was for an Omega. I looked at a Speedy Pro, but the hesalite crystal didn't wear well in my experience and I wasn't that impressed when I did research on the movement (plastic parts, cam rather than column wheel).

While the Speedmaster Pro is a lot of watch for the money and the 9300 has a lot going for it, I'm glad I got the Daytona.

Who cares if Omega is owned by Swatch. Lange is owned by Richemont, who also owns Baume & Mercier/Cartier/JLC/IWC/etc... Just because it's owned by someone else doesn't mean it's not on the same level. The fact that Lange blows Rolex out of the water proves this.

Well that's hilariously obnoxious

Comments like that and people still wonder why Rolex owners get such a bad reputation.

Don't drop any watch on a ceramic floor. Unless you want a busted watch.

Got a new strap for my Grey Side today
And had 3 Pellegrinos while chatting with the watch tech. First class experience. Omega is stepping their game up.

You have to go with your first pick regardless of which one. The Daytona would be my choice! There must be a reason many own both.

Certainly there are watches better suited for tracking the date (those with a date function), but it's a great idea if you needed to track the date for some reason.

Then if you need to run the chrono, you can just reset it back to zero and go.

Owned and wore a speed master pro as a daily for 12 years then sold it to fund something else. Finally came back to a chrono and recently purchased a 1999 a-series Zenith Daytona white dial. I am enjoying it very much!

Both are truly great watches.....I prefer the 40mm Daytona over the 42mm Speedmaster.

Cheers

As a Speedy Pro owner, I am a bit biased, but imho it goes like this:

Daytona > GSOTM/DSOTM

Speedy Pro > Daytona

The Daytona is an outstanding watch. But I believe the Speedy Pro the cornerstone of a collection.

I have now bought and sold the speedmaster twice now. Time will tell what happens when I pick up a daytona. The speedmaster is a great watch, however the lack of water resistance with my active lifestyle was a cause for concern. I tried on the playtona a few weeks and all I can say is wow!!!! Need to find a SS white dial and I'll pull the trigger. I know the Speedmaster's history is unmatched and the movement is amazing. However, there's something that caused less appreciation everytime I put on a Rolex diver which eventually led to the speedy sitting in a safe or drawer. Build quality just felt substantially different IMO.

Agreed!
This is the oldest watch in my collection, Circa 66 speedy pro & my 116520.
